Second baby with ‘grunting baby syndrome’ - am I doing something wrong?

Both of my boys were born at 37 weeks. DS1 is now 3.5 and spent the first few months of his life constantly grunting and squirming. He seemed so uncomfortable on his back we resorted to holding him upright for day and night sleep and I barely survived this stage.

DS2 is 2.5 weeks old and very much the same. It started about 5 days ago, previously he was sleeping soundly. I’m managing to avoid holding him for all of his sleep as I better understand now that it’s a normal newborn thing and they they’re not necessarily uncomfortable, but it’s almost impossible to sleep next to him. He wakes up around every hour overnight and when he is in his next2me he’s so so noisy, constantly grunting so I’m not sleeping at all.

I'm just wondering if I’m causing this somehow? Given that both my boys were exactly the same. They are/were EBF, DS1 had tongue tie which was snipped and didn’t help with his symptoms, he was also quite refluxey. DS2 being seen at the tongue tie clinic next week, no reflux.

Any advice please?!

Young babies are very noisy! Can you try some ear plugs?

My baby also had this and the health visitor assured me it's normal! I think some babies are just prone to it & there's no need to do anything about it.

I’ve been sleeping with one in, to take the edge off 😅 I wouldn’t want to use two though as would worry I might not hear him crying x

Mine did this. I put him in his own room with a baby monitor and an apnoea alarm.

Thank you, in a way that makes me feel better as hopefully it’s not anything I’m doing wrong, I just can’t believe both of mine are/were like this 😭 can you remember when it passed with yours? With my first I think it started to improve around 3 months x

Just what to point out that you aren’t doing anything wrong. You sound like a lovely mum xxxx

Maybe even sooner than three months, eight weeks I think. But then there would be the odd grunting night even after eight weeks. My baby sounded like a goat!

The grunting stopped around the same time the baby stopped pooing after every. single. breastfeed. and went down to once or twice per day (sorry if this is TMI).

They told me this every time when I took my son into a&e. Health visitors, gp, and everyone, though I was paranoid- my baby was feeding well and was gaining weight.
I pushed for referral, and we learned that he had laryngomalacia and needed surgery when he was 3 weeks old as his oxygen levels were low.

There is a big difference between noises. Some are just simple baby noise, but some are dangerous.

Also, a lot of babies have laryngomalacia - they can grow out of it around 3 months. Most mothers are thinking, "Oh, I have a noisy baby."

Op, you should get this checked out. It's probably nothing serious, but I would make an appointment with the gp, just in case.

Definitely not TMI! Mine poos with every feed too. Sometimes I get in a cycle of feeding and changing over and over, as after a nappy change I then feed to resettle him, he then poos again, so I change him again, and round and round we go 😂

Oh thanks for this, I’ve never heard of this before! I’ll definitely look into this thank you x

My firstborn was the same, grunting and squirming all night (when she wasn't crying!). She was so 'busy' all night wriggling and making noises. I think some just are.

Gowlett · 02/04/2025 16:53

GVH, my baby was exactly like this too. Very active, even when sleeping. Only stayed still in a sling, or napping in a moving pram.

Young babies are extremely noisy. There is an instagram account takingcarababies that has a lot of info on this from my recollections.
