When will you tell them about where babys come from?

I told my dd at three (she now four) for a veriety of reasons she was asking, I dont want her to get the wrong information from the school playground, I want her to feel comfortable talking to me about it and I have seen studies that show the younger you tell a child the more likely they are to have sex for the first time later.

She know the basics mostly from mummuy laid an egg

But I didnt count on here shouting on a full bus "I came out of your fuffy" like she did today

So back to the question when are you all planning to, or when did you tell your los?

Think ds was three, might have been a bit younger. I'd bought 'Mummy Laid an Egg' cheap at a charity shop and put it on one side for when he was older. He found it, wanted me to read it, asked a few questions then went away quite happily. We chat about it every so often.

Mine was easy because I was pregnant when dd was 3 and ds was born when she was 4. So obviously she asked where he was going to come out and I told her that there was a special hole that is not your poo hole or your wee hole, but a different hole near them that he would come out of.

Further down the line, she asks questions and I answer them as honestly as I can. So when she asks how ds got there, I take into account her age and tell her that mummy had an egg and daddy had a sperm that looked a bit like a tadpole. The sperm met the egg by a special hug and the eggo then turned into a baby.

When she got a bit older still I said that daddy had to put his penis into the special hole and that's how the sperm gets to meet the egg.

But I only ever tell her when she asks. I don't sit her down one day and say, this is how it happens. If she shows an interest then she's old enough to know and I'll tell her in a way that she can understand.

we just read the book ocassionally when she wants to just the same as her other books at bedtime she doesnt know about the penis bit yet just the tube

Dread to think what she would have shouted if she knew about that!

dd was 6 when I told her that. Like I said, it has to be age appropriate.

So if your DC just aren't asking any questions, how long would you leave it before "the big talk"?

Well I guess I just kinda go by the thought that if they are interested they will ask. Kids at that age, they hear stuff and the first people they go to are you. But if they aren't asking questions by, say, 6, I would perhaps ask them if they would like to know where babies come from and how and just take their cue for how much they want to know.

My dd went through a phase of re-enacting giving birth on the bus, she'd say oh mummy I've got a baby in my womb, I think its ready to come out now, Quick Catch it!

She was 3 and I was pg with ds

DS1 knows that babies grow in mummy's tummy (ok biologically incorrect!)
I thought I would wait for quesitons.
So when he asked a few months ago how babies get out of mummy's tummy, I KNEW the answer (had overheard a friend telling her don)
SO
Well you know you have a hole that wee wee comes out
yes
and a hole where poo comes out
yes
Well mummy's have a hole where babies come out
OK

It had all gone SO well, no lies but not graphic.
Until DH piped up, yup you know like the cat flap the cat goes in and out of the garden through.

will tackle the finer points later... he is 4 and at some point in the next couple of years I would like to have more children so I guess it may come up again then
