Hives

Hi all. My daughter is 16 months and had a gastro virus a few weeks back. It only lasted 2 days with a few episodes of diarrhoea and vomiting. She seemed back to herself by the Friday but developed hives.

She has had these hives appearing and disappearing for the last 2 weeks. A&E put it down to the virus and said should clear up within a few days to a week or so.

She won’t swallow liquid medication and we had a particularly bad choking episode after I tried to give her Piriton yesterday (she does the same with Calpol, we have to give her suppositories when she has a fever) so I’m unable to give her any Piriton either.

Is it normal for them to last this long? It will be 2 weeks tomorrow and although they don’t seem to be bothering her it’s still a worry as she won’t tolerate the antihistamine if it was needed…. I just hope her immune system calms down soon.

Anyone had this with their little ones for 2+ weeks? Feeling a little stressed with it and just looking for some similar experiences and kind words! Thanks all

My daughter had this at a few months older and for a similar amount of time. We ultimately needed a two week course of two different antihistamines to settle things down. That was over a year ago and not had another episode since, so hopefully it will be similar for you.

Would she take the antihistamine mixed into something extra tasty? If the reaction is getting bad and risking swelling, possible breathing difficulties, etc., I'd pull out all the stops, jam, nutella, custard, whatever never mind the concerns about added sugar.

If it is a taste thing rather than texture, a little bit of chocolate before the medicine helps coat the mouth so they don't taste it as much. My daughter sometimes needs a very bitter medicine, and we do chocolate, meds, chocolate – usually manage it with no fuss.
