Can you start breastfeeding at 3 weeks?

Baby was 3 weeks yesterday. He has been formula fed since day 1 and this was the plan. Although when he was first born I did try to see if he would latch and he didn’t and I didn’t have a clue what I was doing anyway so stuck to formula like I did with my first baby. But I just feel regretful this time round, like I didn’t be a bit more persistent or ask for some help. When I’m up and down making bottles during the night and constantly washing/sterilising I think would it be easier to just get baby out his crib and feed him. I’d like to experience that bond aswell. Can you start at 3 weeks or is it not really possible? I am really clueless about breastfeeding so looking to see if anyone has any advice? I actually tried earlier when he was screaming but of course nothing happened. Ideally combi feeding would have been the perfect balance and I just wish I had of thought it through more or gave it a propper chance. Has anyone started later having never breastfed before?

Yes absolutely. It will be hard work but possible particularly as baby is only 3 weeks old.

Have you thought about calling the national breastfeeding helpline just to chat it over a bit? The phone number is 0300 100 0212.

If you can afford an IBCLC they would be the best person to support you but you might find this article helpful too

Yes you can but you will need to feed them pump really frequently to get supply up

It's possible but not easy. There are issues with supply, but also unlikely your baby will actually take to breastfeeding after 3 weeks of having a plastic teat. Worth a try though?

You can if he will latch but I would get the advice of a breastfeeding counsellor or lactation consultant about how to reduce the formula and encourage your supply whilst making sure he's still gaining weight. You may need to pump too. You could manage your expectations by being happy to mix feed and if you can entirely switch to breastfeeding that is a bonus.
