5 week old - diarrhoea frothy poo? Photo warning

My nearly 5 week old has gone from opening bowels around 5 times a day to a lot less frequently, twice in the last week it’s been almost 48 hours between. She’s exclusively breastfed and seems to always be cluster feeding.

Shes now having large bowel movements, very runny and one foamy. She’s also been a lot more unsettled and seems to be straining to go.

Last photo is not mine, but is similar to her frothy one.

Looks normal to me. I remember looking up the bubbles with my first one and found this intresting:
"Foamy stools are often caused by an imbalance between foremilk and hindmilk during breastfeeding. Foremilk, which comes at the beginning of a feeding session, is higher in lactose and lower in fat, while hindmilk, which comes later, is richer in fat. Too much foremilk can lead to digestive issues like foamy stools"

Cluster feeding could point to this issue then. However, if you're worried about her and she's not herself maybe go see someone to be safe xx

There is lots of mucus in them too. Is that new?

witsendhelp · 23/03/2025 18:56

Hi @Carseathelpi hadn’t noticed the mucus in these to be honest. She has had mucus in her poos yes as they were quite stringy, the HV said it was normal as she had a cold. What else could this indicate? I’m taking her to be weighed tomorrow so I will ask then too.

Have you considered an allergy? My little one is exclusively bf as was my other child and they both have an intolerance to cows milk (cmpa). So I don't consume any products that contain cow's milk whilst breast feeding.

Carseathelp · 23/03/2025 20:14

It can be sign of an allergy but it is has only just started with a cold and she is still recovering from a cold then that’s the mostly cause.

witsendhelp · 23/03/2025 20:17

@intrainingHi, I thought it may have been CMPA as LO has had two episodes of, what I thought was, projectile vomiting but the A&E doctor ruled it out and said it’s more likely to be reflux?

Could I ask what symptoms your LO had and how soon cutting out dairy had an impact?
Were you able to continue breastfeeding in the meantime?

@Carseathelpthank you. Wondering if it’s a CMPA as she’s been quite congested, runny nose, laboured breathing, sneezing & coughing etc. obviously put it down to a cold and the hospital weren’t concerned at all.

I thought this was a bit of baby acne but now reading that CMPA can cause a rash?

Both my girls had cmpa. As you’re bf it’s really easily for you to exclude dairy from your diet. If you do make sure you get enough calcium, vitamin D and idoine. Don’t replace dairy with as about half of babies with cmpa are also allergic to soya.

With a cmpa it’s much better to bf than ff.
