DS2 holding no.2 until bed time and not happy

We recently potty trained DS2 (28 months), all went pretty smoothly with him grasping wees in a couple of weeks with the occasional accident.

Early on we had a few poos on the potty but most were at nap time or in the morning in his pull up. This wasn’t an issue and still isn’t really other than now I believe he is holding on to the poo and causing himself discomfort and stress leading up to bed time :(

He is able to tell us his tummy hurts and says he needs a wee, but when he is on the potty no poo comes even if we keep him there a while with singing or books etc. He is getting very upset when his tummy hurts which I think is the feeling of needing to go.

The poo then comes almost without fail shortly after bed time or is there on wake up in the morning!

Has anyone experienced this or can share any tips? Thank you!

GS would only poo in a nappy till he was over 5 then one day he just went on the toilet and thankfully hasn't gone back.
Just potty trained GS 32 months and I've been really strict about not using pull-ups for naps etc and laid him on a changing mat with a blanket as I didn't use a nappy for my now adult children. I think it possibly confuses them or they use like a safety net.
If child isn't ND I would really try a reward chart to encourage pooing on the potty and not put a pull up on in the day time.

This is something I see a lot on MN, that you take off nappy during the day and on at night.

I did the French system with my kids, and when nappy is off, it is off for good, otherwise you have to potty train twice.
You do multiple layers in bed, alternating mattress protector and bedsheet, then again mattress protector and bedsheet and again, so if accident happens at night, you just remove the mattress protector and bedsheet and you don't have to make bed again.

Feet on really high step if sitting on toilet, or smaller step/book if on potty. Blow bubbles with in situ, it's supposed to help relax the muscles.

Thanks everyone, perhaps no sleep nappy is the answer! It makes sense that it would be confusing. I’m happy to go for it I just thought they wee a lot when asleep. I don’t want to create a bigger challenge for him or us by ‘teaching’ him to wait until the sleep nappy goes on

I will also try the reward chart and see if that helps with some of the stress, I don’t want him to become nervous of trying as he’s been so chilled and happy to go for wees since we started

It's very common.

I'd just offer him a nappy to poo in when he says his tummy hurts. You can try putting this in the potty so he's halfway there.

Once he's comfortable he'll transition to the potty/toilet.

He won't be pooing in a nappy at 18. He just needs a bit more time to feel comfortable with it. No big deal.

My 3 year old will only poop in his nappy. He's been doing wees in the toilet for about 6 months. Don't know how to break the habit
