Open University or a Brick University?

Hiya,
Needing some advice on these two options.

I have got an interview on Friday in a Brick University, so if accepted would get student loans etc.

Course would be psychology / social welfare joint degree.

Thinking of the Open University. Can anyone explain how it would work. Would probably do the Open degree (as they don't do the psychology/social welfare as a joint degree).

And how do you work out how much the course would be?

Help

well i wouldnt do open university because i dont have the self motivation really plus my lecturers are really helpful so if I have a problem with something they take the time to explain it plus I like being with outher people doing the same thing as me as you can share ideas

but depends on you and any commitments you have to work around really

jofeb04 · 13/05/2008 17:40

lol dylan.

So, how does the open university work then?

no idea really some one on my course was looking at it but it cost the same for one modual as a year on our course and was going to take a lot longer but I dont know if thats just for the course we are doing

TheFallenMadonna · 13/05/2008 17:52

Go to the OU website and look at the courses on offer. It will tell you the number of points you need to get and at which level, and the cost of each course.

Some food for thought anyway!

Let's see how the interview goes on Friday.

OU do a BA hons social science with psychology or social policy. You would need to do a 60pt (16hrs a week) course per year for 6 years or 120pts (32hrs a week) for 3 years. The courses are about £600 for a 60pter. So around £3600 for a degree. You can get grants if you are on upto about £30,000 with allowances taken off per child. You can pay monthly which is about £70 a month. I am halfway through my first 60 pt course and it is great, so flexible. Tutor support is good and the OU have lots of local groups for socialising and tutorials are about once a fortnight at level 1 so you can meet people and there is also online conferencing so you aren't totally alone.

dylanthecat · 13/05/2008 18:08

That must have been why it was going to take longer obviously you cant do 32hrs a week if you work. Our fees are 600 for one year which is 6 modules and it takes 4 years to get the full degree.

SubRosa · 13/05/2008 19:04

That's a decent price, I have to pay £375 per module

dylanthecat · 13/05/2008 19:21

yes most people dont have to pay because they get a bursery plus 250 a year for books, and other peoples settings are paying for them (its a vocational degree)

dylsmum1998 · 13/05/2008 22:04

wow dylan your course is cheap, mine is 3070 a year! and its loans not bursary so will pay it back at some point in hopefully not so distant future when i get a job
i did start with the ou but dont have the motivation to do it that way so am in brick uni now.
there was ou support in form of tutorials but were a 2 hour drive away in th evenings os i couldnt make it. for me it didnt work so have gone to brick uni and am finding it much easier as i have a group i get together with for study support and we work through probs togther, which for me is easier

dylanthecat · 13/05/2008 22:09

How much! im doing mine through a college rather than a uni (but get certifacate with leed met on) but dont see why that would make much diffrence really

dylsmum1998 · 13/05/2008 22:13

i know ridiculous isnt it especially when they mess everything up, cant get tutor to teach the subject properly and give us handouts one between 3- great so how are we all meant to read and use it, so we have to go and use the photocopier sometimes costin over £1 each a go

maybe i should open a uni- would make a killing with those charges!!

dylanthecat · 13/05/2008 22:18

I think we should especially when most of the time they just say go and work on the computers so everybody leaves (or is that just mine) so you dont really need to open up at all!

dylsmum1998 · 13/05/2008 22:19

lol we do that to- or we sit in cafe discussing uni work our lack of social lifes

dylanthecat · 13/05/2008 22:21

when I go its not even poen so your lucky! Im there six to nine

dylsmum1998 · 13/05/2008 22:24

oh nothing would be open then in ours either. i'm in between 9 and 4 so we can do that. also have a choice of where to have lunch between 2 cafes or if we have a long lunch we can go to the shopping centre a few mins walk away, although this has only happened once or twice

dylanthecat · 13/05/2008 22:25

theres plenty of choice during the day but because its primarily a college its full of sixteen year olds and i end up feeling ancient!
