Hi all. My daughter had a virus last week which caused diarrhoea and vomiting. She fell ill on Tuesday and was better by Thursday, but Friday morning I noticed she had come up in hives. They have continued popping up sporadically on her body since then and on Sunday we took her to A&E as her hands started to swell up and I needed her seen for my peace of mind. Anyway they advised the hives are probably due to the viral infection she’s had and it’s her immune system ramping up. They said they should clear themselves over the coming days.

I’ve given her Piriton a few times which helps clear them and she doesn’t tend to get anymore that day once I’ve given her it. It’s been a week and she is still experiencing the hives, but I noticed this morning I didn’t put any milk in her scrambled eggs and she didn’t get any hives. She’s since had mozzarella and yoghurt, but no hives. Then I had a bowl of cereal this afternoon and let her have a spoonful - she came up in hives shortly after.

Is it possible she has developed a cows milk allergy since this virus? Has anyone else experienced this? Does it go away? She has always been fine with cows milk although never keen on actually drinking it - I use it a lot in my cooking and she’s never had anything like this.

I'm sure I've read they can become temporarily lactose intolerant after illness? If it continues I'd probably follow up with HV/GP though.

DD2 had hives like this once – we'd give piriton, it would clear, we'd stop piriton, and back they came. It ended up needing a two week course of daily antihistamines to settle her system down.

So it's possible she's become sensitive to milk, but it might also just be her immune system still a bit haywire after the virus.

Our pediatrician used to recommend BioGaia, they’re probiotics for babies +. They were really helpful for preventing infections as well as helping to recuperate.

This is how we found out my daughter was celiac, she was fine most of the time but after a virus her stomach lining was compromised, which led to the celiac presenting. It’s probably similar for your daughter. Come off for a few weeks, it might be that she’s not that sensitive, just when her gut has no good gut bacteria it can’t fight off what it usually can. Hope this helps!

We went in lactose free milk for 8 weeks and weaned back onto normal formula, it's happened twice. Both immediately following a bad viral infection. Speak to a paediatrician if you can
