Baby boy is nearly 4 months and been taking gaviscon for reflux but it’s been causing problems with hos stomach finally got a gp appointment and the drs advice was stop the gaviscon, no medication for reflux he said throwing up is normal they would only medicate if he’s refusing feeds and to wean him at 4 months, I’m just unsure on the advice, anyone been in the same situation?

MY DC got prescribed a special formula. Can’t remember the name but very expensive 20 years ago if bought privately.

Maybe try to stop the gaviscon and see if that helps his tummy. If he is breastfeeding his reflux could be because of an intolerance to something you might be eating. My DD had terrible reflux but it got much better after I cut out dairy from my diet. She is 16 now and still lactose intolerant. I think the dr’s advice to wean at 4 months is a little early.

How long has he been on the gaviscon? If it's been a while, it might be worth trying taking him off it or at least reducing it and seeing how he goes – you might get lucky and he's grown out of it enough to manage without/with less. Or he might tolerate carobel better than gaviscon.

Being sick itself isn't necessarily a problem, if weight gain is good and baby isn't distressed. In our case, weight gain wasn't fine and baby was most definitely distressed, but you do get some 'happy spitters'.

We were advised that they didn't think early weaning would make a difference for our baby, but I don't know how much that varies from baby to baby. They were right with DD2, but she is a fairly extreme case.

I agree, stop the gaviscon and see how he is. If he is thriving you do not need reflux medication whether or not he is posseting and on that case there is no BMparticular need to wean early. If he is miserable and losing weight you can go back to the health visitor .

One option is to try thickening feeds with Carobel, that's what the GP prescribed for DS rather than starting him on Gaviscon.

It's true that if their weight is fine and they're not unsettled, there isn't necessarily a need to do anything about the reflux. If that's not the case though, and it is causing an issue, then it's worth considering what might be causing it - I was told that reflux is often a symptom (whether it's to do with their latch when breastfeeding, or CMPA or soy allergy etc).
