3 year old constant meltdowns

I’m on here because my 3 (nearlly 4 year old) is suddenly having huge meltdowns and most of the day.

We wake up, he has meltdown after meltdown.

Fine at nursery all day.

The minute I pick him up meltdowns for at least for an hour or so.

everyday.

I’m at a loss and not sure what to do anymore and really struggling myself!

I stay calm most the time, but after two weeks of this I’m struggling and just burst out crying.

usually if he’s upset, I sit with him until he’s ready for a cuddle and to talk. If he hits he has to sit on the calm down step to calm down.

But it’s like he will calm, then something tiny will set him off.

hes probably tired and I try offering snacks but because of his meltdown he won’t eat them!

It just feels like every second he’s with us he’s having a meltdown. Anyone have the same?

How many days does he do nursery ? Do you think he could be worn out ?

Mumlifeandstuff · 19/03/2025 17:51

@cleo333 He does 4 days a week. Probably, he’s been doing it for ages though and has been fine! It’s just been the past few weeks x

Mumlifeandstuff · 19/03/2025 20:06

Sounds like my kids at that age. Turns out they're autistic. It's a bit early to tell at that age but looking back all the signs were there for mine. the naughty step never worked for mine. Autistic or not, i would try and identify his triggers (keep a diary - what was he doing before the meltdown, how did he come out of it etc), go super low demand after nursery, give him time to recover and lower expectations. Lots of downtime. Lots of autistic children do behave at school/nursery and then when they get home it's like a shaken bottle of fizzy pop.

@Nessastats Ive said I think he’s autistic for years and I want him assessed it’s a long process. That’s exactly what he is like. He’s always been like that and extra moody and sensitive and emotions! but the last two weeks it’s ramped up to another level I’m struggling to cope!

Has something happened in those last two weeks?
