its not a silly question but I do not know an answer. I seem to remember when my DS was little I changed him before because he hated having his nappy changed and then I could feed him to calm him down afterwards. But you will have to do whichever is best for your baby. That might be different. You will smell when there is a poo that needs changing and if you just change the nappy every couple of hours for wee you should be ok!! Congratulations!! How old is your LO?

Hi I always did it before a feed because DS had silent reflux, also other people I know do it before so baby doesn't choke when he possets. However if your baby wakes up screaming hungry (mine hardly ever did - strange little boy! ) it can feel cruel making them wait. Good luck to you and it honestly doesn't really matter.

Not a silly question at all. I think it depends on what your baby does in his nappy after you feed him!! Lots do a humungous poo after a feed, so you might be best waiting. But if you want him to go straight to sleep after, I see the prob as you might disturb him.

My policy has always been, don't change a nappy unless you really have to!

i don't do either. If i change him before a feed he is too screamy and if i change him afterwards i disturb his lovely milky drunkeness. I change him every couple of hours unless he poo's in the meantime (or its the night and i only change him if he is dirty or has leaked!)

Really don't think there is a right or wrong answer tbh - just go with the flow.

I tended to change DD1 after a feed as she needed changing but with DD2 I nearly always tried to change her before a feed (unless she was very hungry and couldn't wait) - she had reflux so all that moving about doing a change after a feed tended to cause problems. I didn't change them unless they needed to be either - esp at night - they could both sleep quite peacefully with soaking nappies and leaving them didn't lead to nappy rash.

I do understand your dilemma though - so many people telling you what to do and it's all conflicting advice. Going with your own instict is really the best way for everything baby related IMO- if you have a second baby you'll find it a lot easier to ignore them all

i usually changed in mid feed, not only because 9 times outa 10 would poo during feed but also bubs would usually get sleepy halfway in so nappy change woke them and continued feeding

beansprout · 13/05/2008 17:35

I just change either when he has done a poo or after about 6 hours if he hasn't i.e. when the nappy is wet. If your baby drops off during a feed, changing can be a good way of rousing them for a bit more milk.

thanks for the advice . I missed out a crucial part of the sentence i am a new mum to be. Now overdue and getting very fed up. i know its not the place but any tips?

oh and if you haven't done so already, get legs and bikini line waxed and possibly legs fake tanned as you will not want to be thinking about this in two weeks

lay in supplies of cake

I used to change nappy before the feed as both DC's were always lovely and sleepy after their feed and i didn't want to disturb them by changing the nappy.

I found that my baby tends to be sleepy after feeding, so I change him beforehand. This also means he tends to feed better as he is more awake at the start. He is much more relaxed being changed afterwards though but I find he's then awake and doesn't like to be put down to sleep. Again it's what works best for you and you don't have to be regimented about it at all. Hope you're doing ok
