Giving up breastfeeding

Hi all,

I stopped breastfeeding my daughter on Sunday and she’s overall taken it really well. She was only having 1 feed a day before bedtime by the time we stopped as I had dropped the feeds gradually. The first few nights she was good as gold, just looked at me as if to say where’s my boob? And I just laid her on my chest and no fuss she fell asleep with a few little whines. Fast forward to tonight and she has been absolutely screaming the house down when I tried to lie her on my chest. She was so upset and it made me want to cry myself. The night before she was quite upset too but only for 5 minutes. This lasted around 10 and was intense.

Please say gradually she will just forget about the boob at bedtime? I feel terrible - does it get easier? If so how long does it usually take for them to be settled into no boob life???

She will forget. How old is she? I stopped feeding my first at 16 months, second at 9 months. Both had stopped all other feeds but still fed to sleep. My eldest was a proper boob monster and it was hard to get her to sleep without it. We tried dad doing bedtime but she just wanted me. But then found it confusing that I was holding her but she couldn't have a feed.

I just stuck with it, through lots of crying, but I'd say within 2 weeks she'd forgotten about it. I did have to rock her to sleep for a while, but it did get easier!

Thanks for your reply! She’s 16 months - like I say the first 4 nights have been a breeze but it’s like last night she realised it’s gone forever. I’ll stick at it of course and hopefully won’t be long before she forgets
