Why?

How long does the 'why?' stage last?

Dd is three next week and is driving me crazy!

Every word is Whhhhhyyy? Don't think she even really listens to the answer, she's just waiting for me to stoop talking so she can say 'but why?'

I promised myself that when the why? stage began I would answer in full and honest answers. Now I have to bite my tongue to stop saying 'just because', 'I don't know' or 'ask your dad'

Please tell me it doesnt last long

SlightlyMadSweet · 12/05/2008 19:04

How is hte premmie Aimsmum?

My 7yos are still doing the "why" line when they fancy it.

Blandmum · 12/05/2008 19:04

Only answer if she asks using a full sentence.

So 'Why is the sun hot' gets an answer but a simple 'Why' doesn't. That way they limit themselves to stuff they are actually interested in

ruksak · 12/05/2008 19:06

as MB says

only respond to the "Why?" with a "Well why not?"

scattyspice · 12/05/2008 19:18

I have a 3yo and a nearly 5yo. They both do it all the time.

MiaWallace · 12/05/2008 19:18

MB that's good advice but the majority of the time she does ask questions if full sentences.

Conversation today.

me: eat your dinner dd

dd: why do you want me to eat my dinner?

me: because it will make you big and strong

dd: why will it make me big and strong?

me: because its full of stuff that will make you grow

dd: why do you want me to grow for?

me: because maybe when your bigger you'll stop asking so many blooming questions

dd: why?

me aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrgghhhhhhhhh!

Have you seen the Peppa Pig when George says why all the time? I used it to stop by DSs saying why. After the 4/5th why I normally say 'Are you being George pig again?' They laugh and tend to stop.

There is a real reason why they say why to do with understanding development. Not sure though - someone more intelligent thanme might be able to answer.

MiaWallace · 12/05/2008 19:33

I should know that since I'm studying a degree in Education studies with a focus on early years.

Never seen that episode of peppa pig though even though dd loves it. Will have to see if I can download it
