Milk

Hi all,

2 nights ago I had my last feed with my 16 month old daughter (still very emotional!). She has been pretty unphased if I’m honest, I weaned her gradually over the last 4/5 months dropping 1 feed a month on average and have had very few tears.

She was EBF and never took a bottle (we tried them all) and drinks water from her 360 cup. To drop her morning feed a few weeks back, I decided to give her some cows milk in the only bottle I know she would suck a small amount from just to give her the feeling of a nipple and replace the lost breastmilk (pumping no longer an option as my supply had dropped so much and I knew I would be finishing soon). She has been offered this every morning for the last few weeks and the most she’s ever taken is 2oz. Most mornings it’s 1oz. I use whatever’s left in the bottle in her porridge, eggs. Weetabix etc.

She is a good eater and eats yoghurt, cheese and egg daily and I wonder if I even need to be giving her the bottles of milk? Just seems a bit of a waste of time and she’s really not interested.

Ar what age should you give a toddler milk until? And is it essential I give her the cows milk at the moment? If so I will put some in her cup going forward.

Would love to hear people’s experiences with this

Thanks!

I’m probably on my last few days of feeding my 13 month old and also so emotional. Unfortunately he’s had to be dragged into stopping kicking and screaming because I want to get pregnant again, he’s not very happy with me. To answer your question I believe two other sources of dairy fulfil their calcium/iodine needs so you just have to make sure your getting enough cals in but other than that you should be fine without the milk

I can totally understand you being emotional. It's partly the end of a phase and partly the change in hormones for you.

It's recommended that she has 300 ml a day of either full fat or semi-skimmed but it definitely doesn't need to be in bottles and can include things like milk used in porridge, custard, Blancmange and in white sauces used to make things like lasagne.

I stopped BF at a year and mine wouldn't take a bottle or drink much from a cup either, so just focussed on dairy products like you've said. It's fine

Thanks for your reply! And well done for getting this far with the breastfeeding!
