hi, i have a 2.5 week old and i've been using cotton wool and water as advised by m/w.

however i'm finding it really a pain to keep going to get hot water etc... esp in the night.

When do you think its ok to start using baby wipes? i think it would make life easier, but don't want to use too soon.

many thanks!!! xx

Yes, you can use them now.

I used to rinse them in warm water so they weren't too cold!

JennsterSlugSlayer · 12/05/2008 17:32

Use cold water? The baby wipes aren't warm.

cadelaide · 12/05/2008 17:33

But not in the night, that was a case of fumbling about and getting it over with asap.

i use a flask and have a bottle of cooled boiled water by the changing mat. A flask lasts all day/night . I wouldn't use wipes, and at least not till six weeks. My baby does not mild cold water now tho

colditz · 12/05/2008 17:33

Leave water out at room temperature and you will find it is no colder than a babywipe!

TRY THE pAMPERS sENSITIVE, OR hUGGIES pURE BUT FOR GOODNESS SAKE DON'T USE jOHNSONS

Ooopp sorry for caps.

cosima · 12/05/2008 17:35

those huggies pure say on them just like cotton wool and water, ok look at the ingriedients!

cadelaide · 12/05/2008 17:36

With dc3 I've used facecloths all along.

You could have a few wetted and ready beforehand. I've never had any problem with wipes tho, i must admit.

IdrisTheDragon · 12/05/2008 17:39

Are you meant to boil the water? Oh well, DS and DD seem to have survived OK.

JennsterSlugSlayer · 12/05/2008 17:40

But nothing is like cotton wool and water like cotton wool and water! What's the problem? I admit to using boiled and cooled water with pfb.

jabberwocky · 12/05/2008 17:44

Do they have the sensitive newborn cloth wipes in the UK? Ds2 has very sensitive skin and those have always been fine.

Lakota · 12/05/2008 17:50

I have to admit with no2 (7 weeks)I used Tesco unscented baby-wipes from the start, and his bottom is still absolutely peachy. Added to which, the nappy change takes mere seconds and all the poo is removed, unlike with cotton wool. However, his face has only ever had cooled boiled water to wash it, and that's still really rashy and spotty!

miamla · 12/05/2008 17:50

sorry, bit of a hijack but why can't you use wipes on a newborn? i haven't yet (he's not born yet!) but they're in the hospital bag for him

colditz · 12/05/2008 18:00

Miamla, I used wipes on newborn ds1, and they made his bum red raw ... he has no allergies, they were just far too strong for his fragile new skin, and he was no premie, he was a bouncing and late 8lb7oz!

The midwife said to stop using the wipes, and the rash cleared up, and I think he was about 8 weeks when I started using them again.

I didn't use them on ds2 at first for the same reason. Poor little baby's backside looked scalded!

miamla · 12/05/2008 18:34

ok, i'll keep the wipes for me and add some cotton wool to baby's bag. hmm this is especially good idea considering DP's skin is sensitive, not something i considered before. What would i do without MN!
thanks colditz

I have used wipes of varying brands from birth on DD (21 months) with no problems.

She hardly ever suffers with nappy rash and on the whole has a very peachy bum. I do find they leave her bum a bit 'wet' though, so usually blot with kitchen roll before putting nappy on.

Actually having said that the only ones I really wouldn't recommend for bottoms are the Huggies Pure ones - she did get a rash with those, possibly because they didn't leave her clean enough. They certainly took a lot of extra scraping and wipes to remove stubborn poo stains!

Seona1973 · 12/05/2008 19:39

I have used wipes from birth with dd and ds with no problems. I used Boots newborn sensistive wipes to start with and then moved to any old wipes really - I do tend to use unscented sensitive wipes though but they dont have to be branded. Tesco, Asda, Morrisons all do decent wipes at a fraction of the cost of pampers, johnsons, etc. If I do get the branded ones it is when they are on special offer. (I dont like johnsons as they dont pop-up as well as the others and you have to fish about in the packet to get the next one out which isnt handy when wiping a pooey bum)

BigBadMouse · 12/05/2008 21:33

I used wipes for DD1 (pfb) from about 8 weeks. Months later I used one from a pack I had in the car to wipe something off my face and boy did it sting! As a result I stopped using them at any time that she had nappy rash.

DD2 only has bought wipes for nursery - the rest of the time it is warm water on a flannel wipe for her bottom.
