ADHD suspicions in 6 year old. When did you take action? Or did school mention it?

I've been a bit suspicious that my 6 year old may have ADHD or some form of neurodivergence for a long time. He is always on the go and ticks off many of the below list from the NHS website.

  • Being unable to sit still - (unless completely zoned into the TV)
  • Constantly fidgeting - (licking fingers /twiddling small toys / scratching / licking lips)
  • Excessive physical movement - (always on the go, held head from birth/rolled/crawled very early and now runs everywhere, lots of comments on how unusually "strong" he was as a baby)
  • Excessive talking - (a constant stream of consciousness about cars / bikes/questions and very little actual listening to answers) He also talks very fast and not very clearly.
  • Running around or climbing in inappropriate situations
  • Having trouble playing or doing activities quietly
  • acting without thinking
  • interrupting conversations (me and DP cant have a conversation when he is in the room or in the car with us without constant Daddy?! Mummy? interuptions)
  • little or no sense of danger (hes getting better at this)
  • Super sensitive and weird about films and fancy dress loud noises.

He seems to like school and is smart with amazing recall for things that interest him, likes maths and numbers. Reading is ok, handwriting isn't so great

School haven't mentioned anything about his behaviour/attention and I'm struggling to work out wether he's just a high energy boy who is also highly sensitive / fearful around kids films and fancy dress or loud noises.

Do I just wait to see if the school mentions anything or if he seems to be struggling as he gets older?
Or should I be being proactive in seeking a diagnosis in order to have support in place if/when he needs it?

I feel like his high energy foibles are more apparent when compared to his younger brother who is a bit more sedate and developed more "normally" but this could just be a general difference in temperament.

What would be the best way forward?

Speak to your SENDCO and see if school has flagged any issues. For a referral you need school's backing so that is your first port of call. Then GP.

My daughters was picked up in nursery at age 3, she masked at home so we didn't see it and was quite shocked when we was told that she was hurling tables and chairs across the room 👀

Could your child be masking in school? Has anything been mentioned from a teacher during parents evening?
I would speak to the school and ask if they've had any concerns. I don't know how you going about getting a referral yourself. We were referred through the school
