What clothes does your baby wear to sleep in when it's this hot?

Hello there, this is my first post and sorry if I sound clueless (first baby and didn't have any baby experience whatsoever before). My baby is 7 weeks and she's just been wearing a sleepsuit at night, but now that its hot I'm paranoid that she's going to overheat. We've put a fan near her and obviously no sheet or blanket now, but just wondering what other people do in case I'm being an eejit. Something sleeveless or legless just seems a bit too breezy. The baby monitor says 24/25 degrees do you think a sleepsuit is too much? Thanks

Don't be embarrassed, if you can't ask on here then where can you ask?

My "baby" is 4 years old, but someone will advise you soon as I can't remember (therefore no reason for me to click on this thread!)

LittleMissNorty · 11/05/2008 19:59

just a vest should be enough....if she's cold she'll soon let you know ...some babies like the swaddling tight feeling though...a thin cotton sheet should sort that out.

My 11 month old is upstairs in her cot in a vest only with window open and monitor saying 24.

My twelve week old is wearing just a sleepsuit and his monitor says 24. Hopefully he'll be ok when it cools down in the night that way...

Hello! I can really empathise with how you feel - DD was born in 2006 when it was scorching for most of the summer, and I spent many hours panicking about what / what not to put her in to sleep. I would say that you would be fine with just a sleepsuit. The fan is a good idea as well. We used (and still use) Grobags, so in that kind of heat, DD would have been in a shortsleeved vest and 0.5 tog bag. Tonight her room is 27 degrees, so she's in a nappy and 0.5 tog bag, and is sleeping just fine.

princessmel · 11/05/2008 20:05

Maybe just a short sleeved vest and a light sheet?
If they are already asleep I'd say a sleepsuit is fine.

My 2 used to wear a vest and a summer gro bag.

PuppyMonkey · 11/05/2008 20:07

A sleepsuit on its own {no vest) and don't bother with a sheet...?

MrsBadger · 11/05/2008 20:07

just a vest (22 here)

but only because there are no rompers (ie short-sleeved short-legged all-in ones) clean atm

Nappyzone · 11/05/2008 20:10

mine is in a baby grow with a celular blanket over him

Liz79 · 11/05/2008 20:11

vest and babygro, no covers or sleeping bag. monitor says 21. we will shut the windows soon

joycemn · 11/05/2008 20:17

Wow thanks so much for all the quick replies! I feel much better now, and not at all dim for asking Think I'll let her carry on sleeping and next time put her in a short sleeved vest and thin sheet. Thanks again.

Don't feel silly at all-i'm looking because I was pondering about dd (who was also born in the hot 2006 summer) and if she was too hot! Couldn't leave the window open as stupid next door started mowing when she was going to sleep-she is in a sleepsuit and a 0.5 grobag but the monitor is now saying 26! Good thing is she quite likes being warm though

suwoo · 12/05/2008 22:25

1 tog grobag and nappy, no vest. Can't leave the window open as DC is too light a sleeper.

LuckySalem · 12/05/2008 22:30

Same question then - My room says 26 even with the windows open BUT in the middle of the night it suddenly becomes really cold - but if I shut the windows it gets hotter.

She won't wear a sheet and just kicks it off - don't want to tuck her in cos again too hot. I've left her in her babygro at the moment with no sheets.

chloemegjess · 12/05/2008 22:33

MY DD is 4months and wearing just her nappy and thin babygrow. I don't put her in her sleeping bag/vest/blanket in this heat. I would prefer her to be too cold than too hot. The way I see it, the only ral thing that can happen if she gets too cold is hyperthermia, which is obviously not going to happen in this weather, where as overheating can be very dangerous. Hope that helps.

LuckySalem · 12/05/2008 22:36

That does help thanks - I'm silly first time mum too and was worried she'd catch a chill.

slim22 · 12/05/2008 22:46

am in steamy singapore. My baby 10 days old
A vest is fine most of the time, swaddling works well if a little cooler.
Tog 1 grobag and nappy sounds ideal but aren't they still so tiny? mine defo still is anyway.

madmuggle · 12/05/2008 23:05

My little one is currently sporting a nappy and has eschewed the coverings on offer in favour of wedging himself into the corner of his cot nearest the window. My daughter is in bed with nightie and socks on wrapped in her duvet. She will inevitably have gone on a mission to retrieve the two fleece blankets I took off her earlier.

It's about 22 degrees here.

They let you know what they want, although I will be removing the blankets from my daughter, as she'll wake up at three in a tizz with herself if I don't.

phlossie · 13/05/2008 10:39

Sleepsuit with feet but no blanket or sheet and the window open. If it gets colder in the night you can put a sheet over. if it's really hot a short-sleeved bodysuit.

ummadam · 13/05/2008 18:02

my 4month old is just in a nappy and 0.5tog sleeping bag at the moment - it is about 24 degrees here at night

EyeballsintheSky · 13/05/2008 18:13

17 week old dd is in a sleeveless vest and a muslin square tucked into the bottom of the mattress (which she'll inevitably kick off and suck!). It's between 22-24 in our room at the moment but if it feels like it's cooling down a bit when we go to bed I'll stick her in her grobag.

I'd rather she was too cold than too hot.

lailasmum · 13/05/2008 18:20

My ten week old has been in a thin sleep suit for the last few hot nights seems perfect temp. I tend to just go one layer thicker than my older daughter who is in shorts and t shirt or nothing at night at the moment.

novicemummy · 13/05/2008 19:20

lailasmum - i'm not sure the "one extra layer" rule applies for hot weather.

DD (5 mo) sleeps with only nappy if room temp above 25. but as well, maybe it also depends on the age of the baby.

lailasmum · 14/05/2008 15:38

One extra layer if older DD is butt naked-Its not that warm at 3am with the window open. I must admit I never bother with knowing the room temp that accurately, we don't own a baby thermometer.
