What age do kids outgrow floor bed?

I am thinking of buying my 2.5 year old a floor bed as she is rapidly outgrowing her cot. We are currently thinking of getting a decent sized bed (small double or double) as one of us likes to sleep with her when shes ill and she often needs help settling during the night and cuddling to go to sleep. At the moment I am still lifting her into the cot asleep but shes getting too heavy for this.

Just wondering if kids get to a point where they want a higher bed or are primary age kids happy sleeping close to the floor? I was looking at an option like the link below but its way too expensive if its only going to be used for a few years. Something a bit higher but still relatively low might last longer but my child has a gross motor delay and I'm not sure she will manage to get in and out of a higher bed yet, especially if she tries to get out at night. She is tall but physically more like a 1 year old who has only just learnt to walk.

My daughter has this bed, she is now 7, and I don’t intend to change it until she moves out 🤣

To clarify, she has the double exactly as in the photo. She slept in our bed from birth, and went into that bed at about age 3

My daughter has had a floor bed since she was about 2. She's 4.5 now and no issues. I think from a storage perspective I might get her a higher one at some point, but not in a hurry!

My 2.5 year old has had a floor bed since he was about 14 months. I popped an extra high guard on it to stop him getting out. I imagine he'll have it for a long while yet

I mean, never, really. There’s no reason they can’t sleep on it forever as long as it’s big enough. I would be mindful of you being able to get up and down from the floor and having space to lie down with them as needed. There may come a time (chronic illness, injury, pregnancy) when you wish you had a higher bed. For example, I’m going through cancer treatment at the moment, which is affecting my joints, and I recently realised that one of my toilets is too low. 😂 I’d truly never get up off a floor bed! That’s an extreme example, but it’s worth considering what the future looks like for you too.

I don't think they outgrow them as such, my 14 year old decided they wanted a raised bed recently but had been on a floor bed for the last several years. They make them for adults so it's just a personal preference really.

Why not just put a mattress on the floor? I get that floor beds look nicer but is there any other benefit?

JaninaDuszejko · 02/03/2025 21:07

Surely it's just a style choice one way or the other. You can put a toddler in a normal single bed, I think with my first I had some cushions on the floor next to the bed for the first few nights in case she rolled out but actually when she did she didn't even wake, I found her asleep on the floor an hour or so later.

The low beds look nice but obviously you lose any storage space under the beds and considering how much stuff my DC store under their beds (even though they have a playroom with tons of storage) maybe that's a good option to have.

I have heard that is risky for mould. Our current house doesn’t seem to have a mould problem and the room is carpeted but I’m still paranoid as pretty much every other house I have lived in has had a problem with damp and mould.

We’ve been using ours since DD was 14 months old and she’s now nearly 4.5.

We’ve got these Ikea wooden slats on the floor and a double mattress on top. The slats allow airflow and prevent the mattress from going mouldy. They’re designed to be used in a proper bed frame but we’ve been using them direct on the floor and no problems so far.

Ah - mould might be an issue I guess. But Im assuming that with a young child (small, light) it would only be for a few years, presumably not all that often with an adult too.

Actually thinking about it Ive slept on a mattress on the floor for months (at my parents house as a teen and in student digs) - it was never a problem.

Loveduppenguin · 02/03/2025 21:28

The mattress needs to be somewhat lifted off the ground to prevent mould etc

BunsenBurnerBaby · 02/03/2025 21:32

My DDs are 15. They still have beds like this we got when they were 2. Are considering replacing now. It’s never been an issue but we are moving house and thinking about getting them doubles.

Maxorias · 02/03/2025 21:38

I never got my kids a floor bed. They had a bed with bars (not sure how they're called in english) until they were old enough to get out without danger to themselves (around 2 I think).

But there's nothing wrong with a floor bed and I see no reason to not keep it for a while, aside from the storage issue.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 02/03/2025 21:42

Mine is 8 and sleeps in a single like this. No problems, but it's really annoying to change the sheets on as it's so low

WildCherryBlossom · 02/03/2025 21:50

My teen DC has that exact bed bought recently because they are in a converted loft room that couldn't take a high bed. No intention of changing it ever. It's a lovely bed.

Which guard did you use please?

I reckon my 3 year old won't stay in it!

I got it on Amazon. Instead of the usual 45cm it's 90cm. Not sure if it would contain a 3 year old but depends what they're like I suppose. Mines a climber so I'm waiting for it😅
