MIL wants to take kids out of school for weekend away…

My MIL has a big birthday next year and wants to go away for the weekend with us, which is lovely. But she wants to go on Thurs evening which means taking our children out of school during their gcse and a level years- the kids don’t want to plan a day or 2 off school during an important year as they don’t yet know what will be happening at that time. MIL does like to plan in advance so this makes it difficult. It also happens to be a crazy busy time for me at work after Christmas ( I’m self employed) and I can’t take time out right then unless I catch up by working at the weekends 😫. How does one tell a very demanding and strong willed MIL that we can’t just take kids out of school during important years . Husband no hope. Please help.

Tell her she can go any day she wants.. You will catch her up on the Saturday, leaving Sunday...

Let your DH go on the Thursday and you follow with the kids on Friday after school/work.

If the kids themselves are worried about taking the Thursday off school, surely your DH and MIL would understand.

Um no is a complete sentence, and often there are mocks for both exam years in January. It's a pain but that's how it is. Send DH alone

This. Simply.

AuntieMarys · 01/03/2025 13:58

As others have said...you just say no. She can't physically drag them there!

Cynic17 · 01/03/2025 14:07

Simple - the answer is "no". The parent of these children should put their education first. If the MIL doesn't like it, that's just tough.

Pretty much what everyone else says.

"What a lovely idea! We can't have the kids missing any school in their exam years, especially right after the Christmas holidays - that's bang on mock exam season - and tbh I don't even know how they'd manage doing no revision on the Saturday and Sunday. Also that's my busiest time of year at work and I can't afford to miss any days that month, but we can probably work around that. Why don't you go ahead and I'll try to sort something out. Maybe I'll bring the children Saturday afternoon to Sunday afternoon? Let's see"

At my kids school they can’t take time off in exam time end of, tell MIL that.
Even if it’s not a rule you can’t plan ahead as an exam could fall on that day, MIL can wait til school holidays or have a shorter break that starts on Friday evening.
