Neo NAZI content on Minecraft

I've just read a horrible article in the times about Minecraft - lots of far right imagery and neo nazi groups on there.

DS6 loves it. We don't allow him to play online or multi player. Only on creative mode too.. However he's really obsessed with it and I'd like to dial down his intense interest. He also adores Lego, so it's similar I suppose.

Has anyone got any suggestions of other video games he could play please? Safe ones.

He also likes to play sonic and Mario. He does have other interests. I'm just looking for ideas for gaming.

Thank you

My husband and I play with friends on Minecraft. It's our own realm. Why don't you set up a realm for him and then it's only for him and whichever friends he invites in to the realm to play

Also, if you're not letting him play it online at all then you've nothing to worry about. Avoid dreadful YouTube videos about it and you'll be fine. Except for Stampy Cat. He's lovely for young children. He doesn't create videos anymore but his channel is still on YouTube to watch all the old ones and they're truly very sweet and wholesome.

Minecraft is safe if he isn’t speaking or interacting with others.

If you allow him online it isn't the games so much but the people he could interact with.

Thank you. We don't allow him to play online at all, I suppose I'm just worrying the direction it's heading. If we do let him one day when he's older. Thanks for Stampy Cat recommendation I will check that out. He watches someone called Farzi at the moment who is ok, quite funny but also quite annoying!

As people already said, you have nothing to worry about if he is not playing on public servers - some of them are unmoderated and have highly inappropriate stuff. Also, he should not be allowed to talk to strangers, and should not be allowed to add random people as friends. If he does play online, make sure its on his own servers and only with people he knows (other kids from school, for example).

But, overall, Minecraft is a great game - very creative, and generally non-violent. So I would not be stopping that. And would try to learn a bit more about parental controls and various things you can do to prevent your DC from accessing inappropriate content.

As far as video games go he's playing the best one there is. I love it and wouldn't hesitate to allow my child to play as you are. Just treat it like other screen time and have a balance of being outdoors plenty and doing other things like Lego and crafts and so on. It's fine.

My 6yo also loves minecraft and also doesn't play online (or know about it ;) ). You should check put mario maker 2 as well - they can build their own levels and then play them through (also offline).

If he is world building "stuff" and friends are too they are creating a world they would like to live in but without the conflicts which arise in the playground. But once they begin to play together online becomes the playground.

And Tommys mum will be letting Tommy roam around the internet with no supervision.
He will be going on line so have gentle conversations early about how he would be communicating with real people and that their way of thinking is how they think in real life

And why some values are just bad or not the way he should think or how to reason and work through if some thing would be a good or bad idea.

Minecraft is great. Just make sure he’s either not online or not in a public realm.

Banning the whole things because some people are using it inappropriately would be a bit like banning books because some of them are inappropriate.

Love the shout out to Stampy Cat! Happy memories of watching endless videos with DS1 (now 16) in first lockdown!
