best nappy pail?

I'm due with number 1 in a couple of weeks and although I've been advised to use eco-disposables for first couple of weeks, i WILL be moving to cloth nappies eventually. I wanted to get a nappy pail with tight fittnig lid now so that I have a place to put any pooey newborn clothes until I have enough to wash and I don't want them in the normal laundry basket.

what's the best nappy pail and where do I get it? I think I'd probably dry pail when I do get the cloth nappies

It's great to hear that you've decided to use cloth nappies.
Don't worry about using disposables for a couple of weeks while you get used to the first stages of motherhood. You'll soon feel ready to start the change over.

As for nappy pails, personally I use a really standard, dirt cheap, plastic bucket with a lid and have never had any problems.
Some people may advise you that you need a nappy-specific bucket and you may prefer that, but I've personally never felt the need.

With regards to your pooey nappies and pooey newborn clothes, whatever kind of bucket you use, you will find it preferable to rinse off the poo before putting them in the bucket.
Fresh poo is far less unpleasant to deal with than dried on/stale poo, especially if you're dry paling.
Personally, I rinse the poo off my nappies in the loo/bathroom and give them a quick hand rinse through with cold water. They go in the bucket with no solid waste and having had some of the liquid poo washed out as well.
They are then far easier to wash without staining.

Where are you, Ginger? You can have my old nappy bucket if you're anywhere near me!

the one trick I missed was getting one with one flat side or even a square one so it sits against the wall nicely - my round one is fine but takes up much more floor space
or get a long skinny one if you have a long skinny space for it

don't forget to get a couple of meshes too

I had one of those nappy wrapper bins left over from the bright idea of shopping whilst pregnant with #1! Lid clips on both sides so nice and secure, square, a decent size.

Well I have the Mothercare one that came as a set with a load of terry squares but I'd stay STEER CLEAR of it. It's a bit small tbh. If I was choosing again I'd go to Wilkinsons and get a cheapo tub with a lid...a decent size too.

I agree with the comments that something with a flat back or square tends to fit in better.

say steer clear I was thinking stay clear and say steer clear and got a bit confused. Ooops

if you care what it looks like you could do like we did and get a brabantia style bin. we got a slimline one on sale, takes 2 days nappies nicely and didn't look out of place in our swanky new bathroom (dry pail only! there's holes in the bottom of the inner liner )

We got ours on ebay - but I second the advice to get a dirt cheap plastic bucket with a lid. The important thing is the mesh bags! Ebay is the cheapest place to buy them and you'll need at least two.

FWIW, we went with disposables for DD only for as long as it took for her stump to heal - cloth doesn't always fold down far enough not to irritate it. I think if you leave it for too long before making the change, it can feel a bit too much of a challenge. But if you just jump in, you'll never look back.

Thanks all - I've been given someone's old one so issue solved.
