Baby eczema? Photos attached

Hello all, interested in others thoughts on this rash on my 15 week old baby's back. I'm wondering if it's eczema or something else? Neither my husband or I have ever suffered with it but my little one has had a bumpy start so far (horrific reflux which we now suspect is due to CMPA) so wouldn't be surprised by this too!! But we're also wondering if it indicates another potential allergy - egg? - as the rash appeared the day after her second set of vaccinations (administered on the 13th Feb). Her older sister (now 3.5 years old) also had CMPA and egg allergies as a baby, now outgrown, but never had eczema or skin reactions. I'm also currently dairy free and have been for about 5 weeks now - but still eating egg.

We'll be paying the GP a visit tomorrow anyway as she's currently to sticky eyes and is teething so badly (pulling ears, chewing everything and just generally very aggy!) but I also want a referral to the dietitian as I'm convinced there's other allergies at play here.

In the meantime if anyone has any recommendations on creams/ointments that may help I'd be very grateful! I've been adding breastmilk to her bath water as I know that can be beneficial. Thank you wise Mumsnetters!

(Apologies if photos aren't clear, she's such a wriggler!!)

Any temperature or cough?

Any temperature or cough?

She has had a horrid cold earlier last week, her sister had also had it too - we were wondering chickenpox at one point as we'd had a warning from eldest DDs nursery that it was in the class but she's had no spots at all and these didn't look like spots to us

Sorry, edit to add no temperature

Not a medical professional. My kids and I get eczema and yes that looks like it could be. Is it dry?

It's quite a large patch so you should get a pharmacist to have a look anyway and get some cream. If it's not eczema they will know

Thanks for your reply - yes it's dry, rough to touch and slightly raised. I'll pop to the pharmacist tomorrow for their opinion and see what they suggest 🙏🏼

My LO had a similar looking rash all over her back, tummy and chest a couple of months ago. The GP advised it was a fever induced rash (she had had a cold too but the cold symptoms had pretty much cleared up by the time the rash appeared) and were told it would just clear up a few days later which it did.

Whatever it is, hope your LO is feeling better and you get an answer x

Aah that's interesting as it did appear when she'd had a particularly nasty cold, and as mentioned it was also the day after her vaccinations - we weren't sure if it was just a coincidence it appeared then or if it was a reaction to them. I'm definitely going to visit the GP to check! Like I said in the OP, she's got awful sticky eyes at the moment too and constantly rubbing them and pulling her ears 😫 poor girl looks a little worse for wear at the moment!! Thank you for your reply!

My DD had similar looking rash to this during lockdown & she had to have antibiotics for infected eczema & use oat cream (aveeno). Hope she is ok.

Oh no that sounds awful! It doesn't appear infected - she's not shown any itchiness or as if it's bothering her. It's localised to her back too, no other patches anywhere else on her body. Really strange! I have been using Aveeno so that's good to know it helped your little one. Thanks for your reply xx

Hi, my LO had a rash similar to this and Aveeno made it worse, we switched to MooGoo and it cleared up. She had the rash when she was 2 months old and it flared again recently when she had a throat infection (8 months old).

I've not heard of that before, is it available in Boots/most shops? Was it more of a viral rash for your little one rather than eczema? Thanks for replying ☺️

@TeainanIV my DD wasn't itchy either. Hope it gets sorted but definitely see GP.

It started as a newborn rash 3 days old, then used to come and go until we started using the moogoo. That cleared it up completely. They have their own website or you can get it in certain chemists.

I'm going to have a nosey at this! GP thinks it's mild eczema and backs up further the CMPA diagnosis! Poor girl looks a little worse for wear at the moment. Hopefully this will be a little better at treating it. Thanks for sharing!

@Ek21 which moogoo cream did you use please as they have several options on their website. I'd like to try some on my DD now as her eczema has flared up but not sure which one to buy.

Ek21 · 03/03/2025 08:00

I used the sensitive skin balm when it flared up, then everyday we use the double cream moisturiser and in the bath we use the 2 in 1 bubble bath.

Thank you @Ek21
