Is it ‘easier’ having x2 DCs in same bedroom?

Currently pregnant with DS2. Full on nesting mode so have been decorating his room. However, it has now dawned on us, how the hell will this work in practice once DS2 has an established bedtime routine? We don’t want to be doing x2 bedtimes by having the DCs in separate rooms and I only just realised this is the route we’d be taking by prepping a whole new room for DS2.

So now, I have taken two steps back and think we should have them in DS1’s room once DS2 starts sleeping better. Currently DS1 (24m) has a small double bed in his room. We could fit a cot in his room initially and further down the line perhaps the two DS can sleep in the same bed together or we switch to bunk beds if not. It just seems more practical to me to have them both in the same room for bedtime. We can obviously keep DS2 in our room until 6 months or so.

So my question is, does this sound like a good plan? Or will one bedtime mean chaos with one DS waking up the other? Thoughts?

TIA

EDIT: by prepped the room I main painted in neutral colours. Still a blank slate and can be customised easily in future if needed so we’ve not put effort into making it a nursery at all.

Nope they will wake each other up!
Tried it and it was a full on riot .

I had a similar age gap and your 3/4/5 year old will not want a teething/ill 1/2/ 3year old in with them
Bath, teeth, stories together in one room and then take the other to their own room to sleep
Once the elder one goes a bit later you will be doing 2 bed times anyway.

It depends on the children. DD2 moved in with DD1 once she was out of our room (after 18months part time and gradually longer)

It lasted until they were 6&7.

It all depends I think, particularly on how much the younger one wakes up & how disruptive they are when they do! Mine have all shared at various points but not when they were still waking multiple times a night.

DT’s went into separate bedrooms when they were six months old. Less disturbing each other and chance to do some one on one time at bedtime.

Mine have always been in separate rooms. Sharing a room is tough. Lots of adults struggle ... 😂

Seriously, as @YesImawitch says, they will disturb each other. Separate bedtimes are worth a good night's sleep for all of you.

Martymcfly24 · 23/02/2025 10:02

Mine shared from 6mo and 3 yo until a few weeks ago, they are now 10 and 7.

Always worked great. One bedtime story and then both to sleep. They were both great sleepers which helped and when they woke in the morning they never woke each other . They went to bed at the same time always.

They have separated now as the oldest wanted a private space for having friends over and that but they genuinely miss each other

Justnippinginthegaragelove · 23/02/2025 10:04

Mine started sleeping in the same room (and king-size bed) together at the ages of 3 and 5. It made the bedtime routine much easier as by that point they went to bed at the same time so one of us takes them to bed now.

However, it definitely wouldn't have worked as a baby and toddler when they were both waking up constantly all night and going to bed at different times. We had 3 years of pain where we would take one each, or if my husband was working away I'd try to convince the toddler to stay downstairs with TV whilst I got baby to sleep. It's hard

Mine shared a room (by choice - they could have had a room each!) from when they were 2 and 4, but when they were younger than that they would have woken each other up in the night / morning. They can still have a joint bedtime routine though - bath and stories together in the older one's room, then carry the younger one to their room to settle him.

Hardly any problems having three in the one room.
Didn't have four bedrooms until oldest was 9.
They enjoyed sharing and very rarely did they wake each other up, even if they were sick.
It was the largest bedroom. We had a higher than normal single, a trundle underneath at 90% and a cot, wardrobe, drawers and a large nappy change/dressing table.

Snorlaxo · 23/02/2025 10:52

It only works if their sleep routine is similar. I moved my kids into the same room once the younger one wasn’t waking up at night and they both woke up at a similar time in the morning.
I have a 2 year gap and dc1 would drop toys into dc2’s cot to cheer them up but dc1 was playing with toys like Hot Wheels which are hard and could have hurt dc2 if dropped on the baby.

TimeForSprings · 23/02/2025 10:59

Depends on the kids.
DS1 woke DS2 (yes) with his poor sleeping habits even in separate rooms. It was better than them sharing tho. DS2 sleeps much better away from his older brother.

yikesanotherbooboo · 23/02/2025 11:07

Mine shared from when DC2 was out of our room. They kept the same routine as each other but were 28 months apart in age which might have helped. DC1 was a poor sleeper and remained so, it didn't seem to bother DC2 .They stayed together until they were about 8 &9 .

Holliebaby · 23/02/2025 11:21

Thank you all for sharing your experience. As with most parenting, there doesn’t seem to be a one size fits all solution. We shall take it as it comes! See how DC2 is at sleeping and keep in own room if required!

My kids have slept in the same room since DD was 3 and DS was 1. I honestly can't think of a time when they've woken each other up (and DS was waking 3 or 4 times a night when they started sharing), but bedtime nonsense can sometimes mean they keep each other up!

They do have their own rooms and DD sometimes sleeps in hers, but they're good mates and mostly like sleeping (DS has a bunk bed in his room) together.

During the holidays I'll set up a cubby for them and they'll 'camp out' in DSs room. They're 6 and 8 now.
