Hi, I have an 8 month old and she is still on the 0-6 dummy size, I have bought her the 6-12 ones but she won’t have them and just gags and spits it straight out. Does it matter she’s still on the first size at this age and can she continue to use it? Thanks x

How big is the plastic bit at the front on the 0-6 vs. the 6-12? The potential issue is that a newborn dummy is very small and therefore an older baby using it could potentially get the whole thing stuck in their mouth and choke. So you do need to be careful but how much of a risk it actually is depends on the size of the dummy relative to your baby’s mouth, so without knowing the brand and how big your baby is it’s impossible really to say… If you’re certain there’s no way the whole thing could fit in her mouth though then I reckon you’re ok.

My child used a newborn dummy until the age of 3. Refused any other size. At just turned 3 they one day instantly stopped using it, probably because it was too small to be of any comfort anymore. I thought that might happen but was ready to send it off to the dummy fairies by 3 if not. They simply stopped using it without any mention that they had ever even had a dummy. There was never a chance of them swallowing it and choking. That’s not possible- they’re not that small!

I made sure they only ever had the dummy for sleep past the age of one which meant that by the time they gave it up it was only ever in at bedtime and would fall out of their mouth the second they were asleep- another benefit of the teat being small because it couldn’t stay in their mouth. All of this is probably why their teeth are absolutely perfect. Bigger dummies wouldn’t have fallen out of their mouth and I’m guessing we’d have had to make more of an effort to do dummy fairy as the dummies would still provide comfort if they were bigger.

My 10 month old has just moved up to 6-18 month dummies. He was perfectly happy with his old dummies, but I was worried about choking after watching him trying to shove the while thing in his mouth sidewards! We had tried to move him up a size at 6 months, but with a different brand and he wouldn't take them.

We now have the exact same dummy but bigger and he hasnt noticed the difference, so may be a stupid question but are you sure the new ones are exactly the same style?
