Grainy poo

Last 3 poos from 17mo DD have been really grainy. Hard to describe but almost like she's been eating coarse sand and the grains are really hard to wipe away. I don't think she's dehydrated at all because there's been plenty of wet nappies in between and the rest of the poo is normal consistency not hard lumps or anything. She's also not been eating anything with loads of seeds.

She also has nasty nappy rash which I've been putting down to her (finally) cutting some more teeth but is the grainy poo a symptom of teething too or should I mention it to the doc/HV?

[still can't quite believe I take such an interest in someone else's bowel habits - the joys of motherhood! ]

It'll be something she is eating IME - sometimes it can take an age to work out what it is and then TADA!...enlightenment.

Defintely mention it to your HV if you are at all worried though.

Nappy rash probably very much down to teething but I doubt grainy poo is.

Ooooh, my 18 month old gets this! I really, really do connect it with teething, oddly enough.

BigBadMouse · 09/05/2008 22:24

Really llareggub? Thats interesting. I wonder why it happens?

No sandpit here!

GloriaMumble · 09/05/2008 23:05

no sandpit here either (yet, sand puchased this afternoon!)

have to admit, not desperately keen to speak to hv as the fantastic one I had up until new year has moved away and her replacement's shite - I have whinged before but this is the woman who really really told me off (in public, loudly) because apparently babies shouldn't have bottles at all once they get to 9 months. I've ignored that!

Ho hum, next baby clinic is Tuesday so, assuming dd continues to seem well, I'll go then.

damn the bloody Internet - have googled and freaked myself out with all the serious things it could be and I'm supposed to be going away this weekend so there's nothing I can do except more googling - arrggh!

What does she have for breakfast?

Weetabix perchance?

You sounds as if you are describing a classic Weetabix poo to me..

BigBadMouse · 09/05/2008 23:27

log off now or you'll have her down at A&E by midnight .

HV sounds fantastic btw

GloriaMumble · 09/05/2008 23:37

nope, she hates all cereal so she has toast and yogurt.

According to google, it could be (1) coeliac; (2) other food intolerance/allergy; (3) autism; or, (hallelujah, found one mention on a NZ mother's forum) (4) teething!

Can now go to sleep

Dd3 had grainy poo today, a reincarnation of the wholemeal pitta bread that she had for tea last night.

Know exactly what you mean about an interest in someone else's bowel habits. Dh & I have bets on when we'll see particular food stuffs again, especially spinach, chickpeas & sweetcorn. It's not right but strangely compelling. We also feel the need to triumphantly brandish those really dry, plug-like bogies that sit there for hours before you manage to get the little blighters. I never thought I'd be doing that either .

GloriaMumble · 09/05/2008 23:57

DH and I both strangely excited by capturing bogies as well!

Will go and see useless shite Hv next week; bet she says its dehydration even though I'm pretty sure its not

Pears?

ktecmum · 26/05/2008 04:26

I came on line looking up 'grainy poop' and found you guys, at least I now know my 16mo is normal, was beginning to worry and yep plenty of grainy poops that had gone but now come back, it may be teeth related he has just cut his two eye teeth !! Have to say though never had this with my two girls.

AbingdonGirl · 11/06/2008 22:30

Hi there. I got quite worried about my dd's grainy poos until my mum told me it could be the pears (dd loves pears). I did a little experiment and sure enough a nice ripe pear creates a lovely grainy poo. Wierd!

ColdMarch · 21/10/2019 10:09

My 19 mo DD has grainy poos, no pears but she is cutting her last two teeth. She also had nappy rash.

mindutopia · 21/10/2019 10:14

Mine gets this quite regularly. It's just because of something he ate. Wholegrain cereal will do it. Certain breads. Blueberries or any other fruit that has tiny seeds (strawberries). I would imagine it's a combination of something he ate (even if it's something he normally eats) and digestive upset from teething that is making everything come out a bit odd looking.

Motherrrrofone · 04/10/2023 21:37

Hi!

Did you ever get to the bottom of the grainy poos? Currently experiencing the same with my 2 year old and Google diagnosis has begun… 🙄
