Hi I recently took my baby to the GP and they think she might have suspected CMPA so I will be eliminating dairy from my diet but I've been doing a lot of research and I have seen people say you should eliminate soya too so I was wondering do I stop dairy first and then if need be stop soya or is it best stopping them both also any more advice about CMPA would be greatly appreciated thank you!

I would start with dairy, and if you don't see much change after three weeks then cut out soya too (much trickier, as lots of dairy replacements have soya in them, as well as bread, and many other processed foods). The proteins are quite similar which is why babies with CMPA are often allergic to soya too (there is a % but I can't remember it off the top of my head).

I did this with my first baby - I actually waited six weeks being off dairy before cutting out soya too, but it meant I could also see that while he had a reaction to soya it was far less of a reaction than dairy, and sure enough once we did the ladders he completed the soya one really quickly, and dairy took longer.

With my second as soon as I clocked the symptoms I cut out both straight away as I guessed if it was both for one then it would be both for the other. Same when it's come to reintroducing though - passing the soya steps more quickly than the milk steps

I personally, having done lots of exclusions for allergy and the likelihood of soya also being an issue, would do it the other way. Exclude both and if symptoms improve then slowly reintroduce soya. If symptoms come back you know that it's an issue and can exclude again, if not and your baby tolerates it then great.

I cut out both at the same time but I had a food diary that showed a clear correlation between me eating soya and her symptoms. I was mostly vegetarian at the time so at a lot of soya meat replacements. We got into a bad cycle of using them for convenience on bad days but then found they triggered more bad days.

What I usually recommend is avoiding high levels of soya in the first few weeks. This would be soya milk, yoghurts and meat replacements but don't worry about soya flour and lectins initially. If you see an improvement you can then try some soya dairy replacements
