3 year old In pushchair

Does anyone else's little ones still use a pushchair regularly at 3 year olds? My little boy is 3 and still use the buggy daily unless it's just a short walk to shop.
He will often get out and walk a lot but I always take the pushchair with me.

Mine did. They didn't walk fast enough for me to get everything done. They'd hop in and out when we had time.
I didn't permanently turf them out of the pushchair until over 4.

Alwaystired2023 · 16/02/2025 16:13

Defo have friends with boys who stayed in until 3/4.. my girl was out at 1 🤣 I've got a boy now too so I imagine he will be in for a while. It's absolutely fine don't worry

Snorlaxo · 16/02/2025 16:14

Mine hopped in the buggy on some days eg in a rush, feeling unwell, lots of walking, extreme (for UK) weather like heatwave

My boy definitely did at that age.

Allswellthatendswelll · 16/02/2025 16:15

It's fine. We walk to the park and preschool and short distances. Anywhere that's likely to be really busy, or we are in a rush or loads of walking we take the buggy. I would say 4 plus is more a cut off and even then theme parks and other attractions rent them for older kids.

KittenPause · 16/02/2025 16:16

It's normal if you're always on the go

They get tired and need to rest whilst we carry on going where we're going

RainingRoses · 16/02/2025 16:17

Most days, no. We stopped when he was around 2y9m. But if we’re out all day we take it with us as he’ll inevitably get tired and want to be carried.

Edit to add that his nursery is just a 5 minute walk away, if that.

Powderblue1 · 16/02/2025 16:18

Mine did. He was a lazy sod but started walking everywhere at 4

TickingAlongNicely · 16/02/2025 16:19

My eldest was walking most places by 2.
My youngest used the pushchair until nearly 4.

The difference? I could go at toddler pace everywhere with the first, and was less distance.
Ypungest could have for example, the mile to preschool, then home again 3hrs later, to then go back again for big sister at the end of school, to then come home again, and then maybe out again to swimming or youth club or dance.... She wasn't the only one in her preschool class.

It depends so much and how much walking there actually is.

Cheepcheepcheep · 16/02/2025 16:20

My 4yo has generally been out of the buggy since she was 2.5yo. We had a double when my youngest was born (DD was 1y 9m) but we swapped to a single when DS was 1 and she was happy to buggy board if she got v tired.

That said, we went on a long walk today, the now 2yo youngest was getting crotchety from being stuck in the buggy, 4yo was getting crotchety from walking, so they swapped and she sat in it for 20m while he attempted kamikaze stretched his legs 😂

JimHalpertsWife · 16/02/2025 16:21

We had dc2 when dc1 was 2y10m and didn't buy a double (or a buggy board), but I did have a sling so if we went for a longer day out they could swap around if needed. Dc1 had stopped napping when I wad about 7m pregnant so we didn't have to facilitate naps.

Thornybush · 16/02/2025 16:21

Yes I still have a double buggy as I can't trust my 3 year old to walk without running off. If we are in a park or somewhere safe I'll let him out but I couldn't let him walk down the main road into town where we live as the cars go too fast.

Yourethebeerthief · 16/02/2025 16:36

No, mine has been walking/biking/scooting miles from 2 years old. It doesn't matter one way or the other though, it's just the way each child is.

I'm glad not to have to push a buggy around. Although I'm glad we kept it because he has needed to go in it a couple of times when he's been very unwell and wouldn't have had the energy to walk when I've need to run errands. Bundled up and in the buggy for some fresh air while I got things done was a god send. I'm not getting rid of it any time soon for that reason.

Welshfiver · 16/02/2025 16:38

Yep still using ours at nearly 3.5.

Dyra · 16/02/2025 16:40

DC2 is about to hit 3, and I still take the pushchair along with me in case he gets tired, and plan to for at least the next 6 months. He usually goes on his balance bike, but on the occasions we don't have the bike with us (i.e. shopping trips, theme parks), he'll hop into and out the buggy as needed.

DC1 is 5yr5mo and will happily use the pushchair if I would let her. She is not a fan of walking. She was booted out of the pushchair by the arrival of DC2 when she was 2yr6mo, though hadn't really used it for a couple months in preparation. We had a buggy board and her scooter for her to get around, which she was happy with.

InTheRainOnATrain · 16/02/2025 16:44

Most days definitely not. After 3 it was very much occasionally even though we live in London so more journeys done by public transport or on foot rather than in the car- big days out and dinners past bedtime basically. We got rid of it for good when the youngest was 3.5. He has a scooter if we need to cover a longer distance and/or be speedy and pull leash for when he’s feeling tired.

Same here. It was more for my benefit to keep them in the pram, I could zoom about without waiting for toddler legs to keep up.

heronsawn · 16/02/2025 17:03

Mine did. We mostly spent full days out of the house being very active in places like theme parks and zoos, and DCs kept napping until school age, so they needed a place to nap. Plus it was more convenient to hang bags off and put sand toys in, and to be able to walk everywhere at adult pace.

SouthLondonMum22 · 16/02/2025 17:06

Mine was out by 18 months but that's largely because I had twins and needed a double buggy for them, I definitely wasn't getting a triple one!

He loved walking everywhere, we just set off in plenty of time.

MarioLink · 17/02/2025 16:44

Both of mine used it regularly at just turned three and after three and a half sometimes when we did long walks. If we walked more we would have used it more right up to turning four but we use the car more than we'd like to due to time pressure and logistics. I think it is much easier to get rid of the buggy early if you use the car all the time and only do short walks. Families without cars often use the buggy the longest and shouldn't be judged for it as walking is so much better for the whole family.

annlee3817 · 18/02/2025 23:37

My eldest did until she was 4, wasn't a fan of walking at all, we sold her buggy a week after she started school lol

My youngest however is the complete opposite and at just under 2 1/2 she will not go in a buggy

TheBirdintheCave · 18/02/2025 23:59

Mine stopped using a buggy around 2 and a half. I wouldn't say it's unusual for a three year old to still use one though!

Unsure4589 · 19/02/2025 00:54

My DD (2.8 years) loves walking but we’re still using the pushchair a lot because her idea of walking atm is being carried for 90% of the journey! She’s also a total liability near roads (we’re in London) and slow/erratic as hell. A 10 min walk to nursery with her takes 40 mildly frustrating minutes! Added to that, she won’t stay seated on trains or buses yet (wants to walk up and down carriages, press buttons, chat up strangers, get off at random stops), so it’s honestly safest atm to keep her strapped in. I sometimes wonder if she will ever learn if we don’t let her roam free on longer journeys, but she’s so unpredictable still, it’s too risky a lot of the time. Plus she’s still napping (some days) and needs it for that.

I can’t see it changing enough to ditch the pushchair totally come summer when she turns 3.
