Two weeks old doesn’t really burp?

Hi
I’m a first time mum to twins!
they both feeding really well but when it comes to after I can’t really get them to burp. They don’t seem like they have any trapped wind I don’t think! But they don’t burp?! Should I continue trying to burp them until they do?
sometimes they will do a tiny burp or fart. I hold them up straight/ prop them up after a feed before laying them flat. Thanks

Yes keep trying. I found that all my kids had a different way of burping them tether worked for them. Try different techniques for the babies and see which one works. www.nhs.uk/start-for-life/baby/feeding-your-baby/breastfeeding/how-to-breastfeed/burping-your-baby/#:~:text=Place%20the%20palm%20of%20your,or%20pat%20your%20baby's%20back.

Congrats on twins!!

My breastfed babies didn't burp much until we switched to formula.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 14/02/2025 21:20

I didn’t ever burp DS. I was very young, I didn’t know you needed to.

I’m still not sure why it’s a thing.

mine is 2 months and breastfed sometimes he burps sometimes he doesn't. Just tap and rub the back a little ,if he has gas he will burp.

PercyFone · 14/02/2025 21:22

My DD's didn't really either. I assumed it was more of a thing for formula babies.

Watto1 · 14/02/2025 21:37

My two didn’t really burp either. I think some babies just aren’t very windy!

Thighdentitycrisis · 14/02/2025 21:50

Mine didn’t burp then ended up with lots of colic

AmyW9 · 14/02/2025 22:10

BF baby, mine never burped. I was obsessed with trying to get them too and it just never worked. Have since become more aware of the fact that for as long as they seem comfy, it's not worth stressing about.

I should have added the twins are combi fed. So I’m pumping breast milk into bottles and formula. So they should get air when drinking the bottles right? When they don’t burp they don’t seem uncomfortable after, usually fall right to sleep. I just don’t want to cause any trapped wind!

I think you only need to burp them if they seem uncomfortable or relux-y. My baby, even when breastfed, HAD to be bumped every time. But if your DTs aren't uncomfortable, no need!

SnowSnow · 15/02/2025 07:01

I read that not all babies need to burp and sometimes carrying on trying for a bit longer can then make them uncomfortable with jiggling etc so if you have a quick try and nothing and they aren’t uncomfortable it’s absolutely fine.

Youcanttakeanelephantonthebus · 15/02/2025 07:04

I'm sure I read when dc were small that burping was a completely cultural thing that people in the UK are obsessed about but most cultures don't even think is a thing. They just feed their babies and get on with life.

Cornishskies · 15/02/2025 07:19

None of my three ever burped , I didn’t even think to try to “wind” them as they were never uncomfortable.
I was always a bit bemused when the Grandma’s on each side, if they had the chance, would insist on enthusiastically jiggling & rubbing their tiny backs whilst the babies slept obliviously after a feed.
They were all breast fed so that might make a difference but I agree that unless they’re uncomfortable, don’t worry about it.
Congratulations on your twins .

HoraceCope · 15/02/2025 07:21

i didnt really bother but some people are obsessed with wind

remaininghopeful23 · 15/02/2025 11:34

A paediatrician told me that a baby who's windy won't settle and you will know about it. Which sounds so simple when you hear it but I think we're so used to the image of a baby needing winding that we think they must😂 Wind is terribly uncomfortable for babies so if they're settling and sleeping then they likely just aren't windy babies. I would say always try to wind them, and as their volumes increase they likely will start to encounter wind eventually. But don't overthink it for now if they're content. Big congratulations on your lovely twins! I hope you're getting lots of help and support for yourself too❤️

My baby didn't need burping for about the first 6 weeks, I think. Just depends on the baby. If they I
don't seem uncomfortable, I'd leave them to it. Maybe try burping again in a few weeks or if they do become uncomfortable try again.
