Is this normal.....?

My Son is 3 months old and looks like he has combination skin. He's dry is dry and flaky on top of his head, but appears to be spotty and greasy in the rest of his face.

Is this normal baby acne? Or a form of Eczema? He doesn't seem to be itchy, or scratch his face.

Should I be concerned and contact my Health Advisor? Or is this normal for his age?

Thanks

What are you washing him with, and his clothes/towels/bedding?

HJ1989 · 08/02/2025 08:33

We use Johnson's baby block soap on him and we tend to use non bio detergent/fabric softener as my Husband and I both have sensitive skin. (He's got Rosacea and I have Eczema and dry skin).

We've also been putting either Sudocrem or Patrolium Jelly on his skin if he scratches himself

Dry skin on the head could be cradle cap, you can soften it with baby oil before a bath and then comb it out. Babies can get little spots/baby acne, I would maybe try changing washing powder to something like Fairy and bathing less often?

It best not to use fabric conditioner.

My DS had eczema as a baby and I used Surcare in the washing machine. Eventually we were able to move on to Fairy.

I'd switch to something gentler on him like a fragrance free sensitive skin baby wash or a fragrance free natural soap bar. Use it all over , to wash his hair and everything rather than baby shampoo.
Try just water on his face.
For laundry it's best not to use fabric conditioner and you could try a fragrance free detergent- I could only use fragrance free when my DD had bad eczema, she couldn't even handle fairy etc.

Ah looks like my little one's face was before I first took him to the GP, they said it was eczema and prescribed hydrocortisone cream to get it under control and then E45 cream which has prevented it from coming back. Always worthwhile to get them checked though just to be sure I reckon!

My boy had similar. Ended up going red raw due to his constant itching. We ended up using steroid cream from gp which cleared it. But then noticed him itching and turns out he has CMPA so noticed after doing a food diary that certain foods brought out the rash. (Mainly diary like yogurt)

If he's formula fed I'd suggest asking for allergy testing from gp just to rule it out. Mine was exclusively breastfed and I didn't notice until I was starting to introduce solids.

All the best mama

Definitely wouldn't use Johnson's. Aveeno is good. Could be CMPA possibly. That looks pretty bad.

Pugsley33 · 08/02/2025 11:47

Agree, don't use Johnson's. Aveeno is good, but trip to GP required. They can prescribe bath emollient and moisturiser. If you feel there's not improvement then push for referral to dermatology.

Thanks for your advice. He's Got his 12 week injections next week, I'll ask the Nurse when I go to my GP's

Wouldn't ask nurse. I'd go for a GP appointment ideally.
