Bedwetting

Hey everyone

Just want a little bit of advice Smile

So my 4 year old (he's exactly 4 and a half) has been potty trained in the day since a couple of months before his 3rd birthday - picked it up within a couple of days, don't think he's had an accident since!

This week I took the nappies away at night as I noticed his nappies were dry most of the time in the morning. I limit liquids way before bed, he has a wee at 7pm right before he goes to sleep and I always put him on the toilet around 10pm before I go to bed

And he's wet himself 3 times in a row! So last night I even put an alarm on at 2am to put him on the toilet .. and he's still woke up absolutely soaking the poor thing 😩

Not sure what else I can do? Shall I just accept he's not ready, get the nappies back and try again when he's 5? I know people say you can't really 'night train' and it's a hormonal thing, but then others say once you take the nappies away to never bring them back so not sure what to do about night time! Thanks in advance ❤️

I'm guessing his nappies probably weren't actually dry in the morning, probably just that his little wee had been absorbed and seemingly looked dry! He's not weeing loads, probably only once the whole night but enough to obviously make himself and the sheets very wet. Poor thing keeps saying he feels like a baby 🥺 I keep telling him it's very normal

My oldest wasn’t dry at night until sometime during her first year at school. You are doing everything right, maybe go back to pull-ups for a while and take the pressure off.

momofonex · 03/02/2025 06:57

Yes that was my initial instinct was just to bring the nappies back .. it's just a bit confusing as I know it's a big 'no no' during day time training but others say it's different at night! 😅

Just use pull ups at night. Like you said, it can't be trained so until it happens just pull ups. Don't refer to them as nappies to him, maybe that's why he feels babyish

TurquoiseDress · 03/02/2025 07:06

Just go back to pull ups for now, it's fine

Jk987 · 03/02/2025 07:08

Don't call them nappies, just pull ups. Nappies are babyish.

DappledThings · 03/02/2025 07:09

Just bring them back. Night and day are totally different. He could need them for years yet.

Our eldest wasn't reliably dry at night until 5 or 6, despite being potty trained for years, and even now he won't wake up to pee. Our you best was dry at night by 3.5 - it's a hormonal thing. One day it just kicks in that they need to wake to go but it's super common to have ages worth of dry days and still not have dry nights. I'd just pop him back in pull ups at bedtime and wait it out :)

ForgettingMeNot · 03/02/2025 07:16

Took my son years to get dry in the night, he was about 8 or 9. Some kids just take longer

Yeah I do say 'bed time pants' to him not nappies but he's not silly he knows what they are 😁 he won't be happy but he's probably finding it worse waking up soaked through so he'll be fine!

DD was potty trained at 2 & 2 months but is only just dry at night just shy of six, in year one.

We kept her in night nappies, there are plenty available of larger sizes as it is really common. And she was fine calling them night nappies! A pull-up is a nappy; she’d been in day pull-ups since 18 months as they’re easier, so wouldn’t have got the difference – we always emphasised the difference in day wee and night wee, explaining that the night wee is sneaky and escapes, and it wasn’t to do with her any more than a bad dream would be.

We call ours 'bedtime knickers'. Same age and exact same story here @momofonex . We've now gone back to our bedtime knickers!

SallyWD · 03/02/2025 07:32

Use nappies or pull ups at night. My son was potty trained at three but not dry at night until 8! So he wore pull ups until 8. I never worried about it. I knew it was related to a hormone that kicks in any time before puberty. It's not something you ir they can control.

momofonex · 03/02/2025 07:32

Ahh this is making me feel so reassured, thank you so much everyone! I'll go and buy some pull ups again today and try at a later time Smile
