Baby wakes for 4am since earlier bed time

When my baby turned 12 weeks, we started a bedtime routine, putting him down at 8 PM after his last feed. He settles easily and sleeps well.

Before this, he used to go to bed with us around 11 PM and would sleep through until 8 AM.

Since starting the earlier bedtime, he now wakes at 4 AM for a feed before going back to sleep until 8 AM. I tried adding a dream feed at 11 PM, which he takes easily and settles back down, but he still wakes at 4 AM for another feed.

Should I accept that 4 AM is his new feeding time and drop the 11 PM feed, or keep offering it to see if things change?

He is still so tiny and it’s completely normal to wake up multiple times a night. I would say feed him when he wakes.

Everything will change again in a week or two. This might be a growth spurt, or a spacing out of feeds in the day, or walking for comfort... But it will change quickly. If LO goes back to sleep for 4 h after that feed, and it's hours since previous feed, I'd say that's good going for a 12 week old.

Maybe bump the bedtime up to 9pm in hopes of a 5am wake up call?

You are extremely lucky to be getting such wonderful sleep at 12 weeks.

This basically. Mine woke hourly between being born and that point. You honestly have no idea how lucky you've had it. Hopefully with a little tweak as @mathanxiety said you might get a later wake, but don't be disheartened if sleep goes haywire at any point. Teething, sleep regressions & developmental leaps all affect sleep.

He’s still very little, my DD was waking up around this time at that age and sometimes even in the night. You will probably find his wake ups getting gradually later and he starts having bigger feeds.

This illustrates CurlewKate's baby Rule Number One perfectly. Stick with whatever gets the most people the most sleep-aka if it ain't broke don't fix it! Can you go back to your previous way of doing things?
