2 1/2 year old maybe autistic - how to get a diagnosis in Scotland?

Hi everyone,

My little boy is 2 years and 8 months. He doesn't speak (his only word is anana for banana) so my HV referred him to speech therapy.

I had some concerns about autism and the speech therapist agreed and said he shows quite a few signs and she thinks he has autism as well and will adapt the sessions as if he were. (doesn't point, screeches, covers his ears, doesn't like crowds, prefers to play by himself, stims, doesn't always respond to his name, etc...)

I know the waitlist for a NHS diagnosis is extremely long and I would like to go private.

Are there any places that offer a diagnosis for a child this young? I live in Glasgow but I can travel within Scotland.

Are speech therapists trained to spot signs of autism?

What is the best thing going forward?

Thank you

Hope you are managing OK? Sounds like you are being proactive.
Speech and Language Therapists are trained to look for signs of autism and can advise on support for communication.
I’m not in Scotland but the NAS has a link on their website to a service in Stirling. Looks like they use ADOS which can be used for various ages including young children.
