Hi all, hoping to get either advice or reassurance please. DS6 seems to be struggling with things quite a lot at the minute, often complains of feeling sad or worried although he can’t explain why, is very reluctant to go into school (although is absolutely fine when he’s there) and unless actively involved in play can tend towards being quite mopey. He’s always tended towards getting a bit locked in on feelings and once he feels a certain way can seem to struggle to get past it, but it seems to be escalating quite a lot lately and he’s gone from being this funny, amazing little character most of the time to us only seeing that side of him some of the time and more and more getting the sad, mopey whingey side. This doesn’t feel like an age appropriate development stage (although would be very relieved for that to be the case) and we’re at a bit of a loss for how to help. Thank you

Is he getting enough sleep, fresh air & exercise, and good nutrition? My 6yr old is like this after school at this time of year, just tired and fed up for not much reason but she is ok at weekends? Is he still like this Saturdays & Sundays?

Did anything happen at school?

Hi, my daughter became sad at age 4 - she called it "sad life" When I took her to the doctor who recommended me to go to a psychologist, it was discovered that she had a viral infection that lingered and made the brain seem heavy and cloudy. She did in fact have a bad cold, but I forced her back in school. The doctor said she did not get to recover properly. She also said that this was a fairly common occurrence that is often overlooked by parents. Was he sick recently?

Weekends are better but still not perfect. That’s interesting that yours is like this as well, makes me a bit less worried that something bigger is going on. That said, definitely ticking all boxes for the above so still not sure why he’s struggling to this extreme

Can be as confident as possible that it hasn’t - comes out saying he’s had a great day pretty much every day, is doing really well and teachers very happy. He had some issues with a friend last year being a bit mean and told us immediately, that was sorted and we check in every now and then and he’s adamant that it’s all good again now. And I believe would definitely tell us

Sad life - bless her! Nope, not been ill bar a mild cold, but that’s interesting. What fixed that, just time and rest? We are considering a psychologist or therapist, if there is something big going on then would rather get help for both him and us in how best to support him as early as possible
