DS loves football and has been subbed and given less and lesser playtime during every match. He was on defence later moved to wing. In comparison to other team members this is his first team experience. Few of the dads/uncles are coaching and managing the team with their children playing with other players who are competent. Our DS tends to loose focus and gets bored as he does not get the ball passed on. He may need to work on skill development along with stamina.

Recently, when he felt really sick while playing, he held it in until match was finished and exited before team talk as he did not wanted to throw up on pitch. One of the main guy( not his coach, but a decision maker I suppose) noticed him walking out and came on at us asking why he walked out without informing the coach. When I mentioned he is feeling sick, he was not bothered to show any empathy and felt entitled to make a comment on his performance in child's presence. This message is for anyone potentially in a similar situation.

DS has been kept out since the incident, but the question is, should there not be a way to provide feeback where child's confidence is not hampered. Being parents themselves, felt these coaches/ managers should understand this. Guess, people have their own reservations....

Kids sports are hit and miss. I have pulled my kids from a few things because coaches are only playing the best kids or the kids won’t include one of mine. It takes a while to find the right place. Unless you are prepared to coach the team you just have go with it or move on. Have you spoken to any other parents?

A lot of coaches are so desperate to win they forget it’s for kids.

Kids football is one of the worst activities I have witnessed, especially the boys.
I think you just have to move clubs until you find one that is the right fit.
Good luck, we gave up in the end and DS did martial arts instead and is now happy being a cadet. Activities should be fun not pressure!

Have not spoken to other parents yet as few of their children train in the team

We are thinking in similar lines snd condidering other options. But DS is so attached its hard to get him interested in anything else. I think its more the idea of being apart of something, they dont want to miss out on. This was our first experience and felt there is a lot of politics going on in the background. Kids grow up too quickly in these kind of set ups as parents are super competitive. Playing for fun and enjoyment doesn't exist. Not everyone could get into professional line of sport.

There will be nicer teams out there- it really is on you to find them. How old is your son?

Marshmellowandme · 29/01/2025 07:03

He is 10

If you’re on Facebook join all your local pages where teams look for players- most people will be upfront about team ethos. It’s usually the lower ability teams that are friendly and give equal game time. At aged 10 it really should be about fun but there are lots of dodgy coaches out there so be pickier when finding his next team.

Thank you @JollyGreenSleeves thats a good suggestion.

Yep 100% find a new club for him. If he's less experienced see if there is a club with multiple teams in an age group so that he can play in a development team.
In my experience most teams are run by one or more parents but it depends on their attitude/approach whether they are just run for the sake of their kids because they want their child to be the next Ronaldo because their own football careers' stalled in pub football.
