Has anyone been told to still send their child into school even if they vomit? child vomited in school today I was not called to collect and when I picked them up the school staff told me that the 24 hour rule "isn't a thing anymore" and they should be in tomorrow as no need to keep off anymore? I know schools are hot on attendance so Does anyone else's school no longer have a rule on sickness?

Well, it’s a long time since my children were at school, but I would be very cross that they hadn’t called me. Your poor child, I know it’s important that children attend school but sick children should be at home. I thought it was 48 hours since the last episode? No wonder bugs spread like wildfire. Your child, your call! If you don’t think they are well enough to attend tomorrow keep them off.

trouble is they threaten with fines and court now if you don't send them in 😕

It’s madness! World of difference between taking children out of school for a term time holiday and keeping off a poorly child.
I would be reminding them of their duty of care to your child, other children and staff. I would also check what their attendance/sickness policy says.

My understanding is that sickness is 'authorised' and most other types of leave aren't.

If your child vomits more tonight then you have the right to call in and say she's still unwell.

If she's better by tomorrow then send her in - the comment about 24h thing is to do with viral infections. It's completely possible to just vomit once as you've eaten something / felt anxious even amongst 100 other reasons. Doesn't mean the child is going to remain unwell and not fit for school.

If she's got other symptoms though, temperature etc then keep her off.

I wouldn't sent my child into school if they were unwell and I wouldn't expect a sick child to be in class with whatever bug they have to pass on to everyone else including the teachers - just doesn't make sense!

I think that you should get clarification from the headteacher

Purplestarballoon · 28/01/2025 22:38

Ours is 48hours after last symptom if it’s a d&v bug

Jollyjoy · 28/01/2025 22:39

Wow my school wouldn't let you back for 48hrs with the tiniest sniff of vomit, or diarrhoea too when in nursery. Which I support. I'd be alarmed if I wasn't told they'd vomited and if 48hr rule wasn't applied. If anything ime it's not long enough.

Noeey · 28/01/2025 22:49

the member of staff who said it was not the head teacher but the head teacher does state it's 24 hours she changed it from 48 when she started. i'm just confused why they are now saying they need to come in regardless.

Our weekly school newsletter last week reminded us that we are not to send our children into school if they have vomited and for 48h afterwards and if they have a fever that requires Calpol/ibuprofen to be managed.
They have been battling sickness bugs since mid November and it just keep coming back
My daughter was sent home last week due to being sick and I was told she couldn't come in the following day either

MarioLink · 29/01/2025 10:57

They should have a 48 hour rule and not only would I be observing it myself I would be contacting the head in the first instance to find out why they aren't following basic guidance in preventing the spread of norovirus.

Noeey · 29/01/2025 16:39

The head set the new 24 hours rule so no point contacting them

But I was told to ignore this as it isn't a "thing" anymore apparently
