Getting 'period ready' advice please

My soon to be 9 year old is a big girl and I've been reading more and more about early period starting from 8years onwards.
I'd like to start getting her ready so it doesn't feel like a big deal or something terrible when she starts.
I'm going to buy her some period pants, and I'd like a book if anyone can recommend something that's suitable for this sort of age.
Any other tips would be great.

My DD is a "bigger girl" and has only just started (aged 12 nearly 13). She's taken to it like a duck in water.
I think the main thing that helped is being super open and honest with her about my own periods.. talking about it, when I'm on it and for example have period pains, have asked her to get me pads if I've run out in the toilet etc etc... so, in other words, she knew what to expect!! Shes kept a period kit in her school bag for the last year (spare pants, pads and sandy bags and wipes) so she's ready (though, it was extremely light when she started) and when it did happen, she was away from home and I got a simple "I think I've started my period xx" text. So I think just being open and having open conversations works!!

I too explained it all at 9 as DD was one of the youngest in her class and I thought that out of a class of 15 odd girls, one of them was bound to start their periods soon.

I bought her this starter kit and there's advice about how to make your own starter kit here. Part of the reason that I wanted to get the Hey Girls one is the donations they make.

Like the PP my DD didn't start hers at 9 but did carry enough products to get her through the day if she was at school.

There are some recommendations of books here.

It's funny how quickly you forget things though because now I can't remember which one I bought!

And do have a look at the Preteen section on MN. I found it very useful at the time Wink

Thanks all.
Chubby, rather than tall or developing.
I heard a trigger is being about 7 stones and she's not miles off that so wanted to start getting her ready by making it a normal thing to chat about now and again,

Maybe not for you, but aa well as pants etc I got some amazing women we know (grandmas, aunts, family friends) to write her notes/cards about growing up, how life changes, encouragement. Some of them also gave gifts like a microwave heat pad, notebooks, chocolate. I put all this away and when she started her period we sat down together and opened them all and it was really special - she felt so loved and it marked a rite of passage for her as a women 🥰

Milli hill has a great book which id recommend about periods
so just be factual - I got my DD ready with a pack to take to school with pads, disposal bags and spare knickers (showed her how to use them etc and not to flush down the loo)
also periods can be erratic to start with before settling into a predictable cycle and that’s normal
also period pants are a game changer especially at night
