is any funding you recieve from a research council towards postgraduate degree classed as income by the tax credits? Say if I were to get £12,000 a year from a research council??

This implies it is disregarded but you might want to check your specific circumstances with your Union Finance Officer as having a working partner may affect your eligibility for Tax Credits.

My DH receives research funding and it didn't count as income when we applied for tax credits. Obviously you need to check your own eligibility but this really helped us.

My funding was not classed as income.

No its not classed as income which is great -the flip side however though is that you are not seen as working therefore cannot claim for childcare costs (which is ridiculous when they recommend you study 35 plus hours a week!).
