Baby first immunisations - 6 days after and he is broken

Posting here as getting no help on the other thread and last night was horrendous. Not going down in the crib so it took 20 minutes to resettle and then 20 minutes of sleep before he was up screaming again. Repeat all night:

Can anyone offer some advice? My lovely, smiley 10 week old has really been struggling since his first lot of immunisations - he had them 5 days ago.
Since then, he’s basically miserable whenever he’s awake, will only sleep when being held - for barely any time at all -and is up every 30-60 minutes through the night, crying. He used to do 5 hour stretches and would wake smiling.
It’s like he’s broken. He’s posetting feeds a lot and his poos are thick and green - he’s only had 2 dirty nappies since last Wednesday, but that’s quite normal for him as he’s always been quite constipated.
I just don’t know what to do to settle him. I‘ve come upstairs to try to rest after another sleepless night but I can hear him crying downstairs as DM tries to settle him in her arms to get him to sleep.
Has anyone else experienced this? How long might this last? With DS1, he had a day or two of fussiness but was completely fine. They also didn’t affect feeding, nappies or sleep.

Adding: he’s FF Hipp Organic which we switched to as he suffers with constipation. Been on it for about 5 weeks and no issues until now.

Please can anyone help? I’m so depressed and upset, I keep wanting to cry - where has my lovely baby gone?

Hi op, the rotavirus vaccine is live so that's probably making him have a bad tummy ! Poor baby and poor you, I've been up since 2am with my 11 month old so you have my sympathy 🤕

Noodlesnotstrudels · 28/01/2025 06:46

The rotavirus vaccine can cause quite bad poops for a while, but it could also be that he has coincidentally picked up a tummy bug? DD2 had one around the same age and it caused her nappies to be absolutely awful. It lasted about two weeks. If you are worried, you should book a GP appointment and get him checked over - they will never mind seeing a very small baby. Take some pictures of the dirty nappies with you and the GP can advise. Is he still doing lots of wees and feeding well?

Are you giving regular Calpol ?

Thank you both. He hasn’t pooed much (only twice since last Weds) which is normal for him but I’m wondering if that’s causing the rotavirus to hang around in his system?

His poo yesterday was also thick, green and smelly.

His wet nappies are fine and feeding is erratic. Sometimes taking 5oz, sometimes 1oz.

He’s taking a lot less at night too. He’s lying on me now and I can feel him constantly farting.

To add to the other sensible replies, apart from it sounds like his tummy is probably a bit sore, sleep breeds sleep, I am a huge baby wearing fan so if you have a carrier, pop him in for the day and let him rest as he sounds very over tired and even as an adult, I know the more tired I am, the worse pain feels.

Are you giving regular Calpol ?

No, I gave it straight after the injections, 3 doses as then an extra dose the following day as he still had a temp of 38, but it came down and is normal. Should I give more or avoid because of his belly?

It won’t affect his tummy, if he’s not happy I’d give a dose and see if it helps him settle.

willquestionwith · 28/01/2025 07:02

@Shruggs yeah op one more calpol dose won't hurt him, I did it for dd2 as she was still struggling after her vaccines a few days later. I think you could be right about the vaccine hanging around abit longer if he doesn't poo often.

Lottie6712 · 28/01/2025 07:18

This sounds tricky. Really hope you're ok. The rota virus vaccine threw off my baby (now 5 months) too. It will pass and much better than the real thing.

Ughn0tryte · 28/01/2025 07:27

What's his urine output like?
I would probably inform the GP surgery that 5 days post vaccine these are their symptoms.
They can keep a log and they can suggest some directions.
Might even suggest alternatives for future vaccines like spacing them out etc.
5 days still unhappy they may also offer a timeframe of when to bring him back in for some extra help with pain and discomfort.

Shruggs · 28/01/2025 10:08

Plenty of wet nappies. He seemed to improve slightly this morning but has just been screaming for about 20 minutes straight and refusing his feed. He will only settle when I stand up and bounce him. He’s 14lb do my back is in half. Poor thing is really struggling. Going to give him calpol when he wakes.

GP wasn’t much help to be honest. Since he’s having wet nappies and pooed yesterday she said it’s Colic… which doesn’t seem to add up as he’s never screamed like this before and it’s literally just started after the vaccines/is getting progressively worse (could be a coincidence, I know).

She tried to prescribe infacol, which he already has, so I asked if maybe she could give something to help him poo. She prescribed suppositories, which aren’t in any local pharmacies so we can’t pick them up until tomorrow at 3pm.

He’s screamed most of the day and refusing feeds/being sick. She didn’t seem bothered by that as he hasn’t had any blood in his poo and his stomach doesn’t seem bloated. I just don’t know what to do except nurse him and try to keep him comfortable. It’s making me cry hearing him screaming in pain.

Thanks for checking in. He’s still struggling some of the time and having moments of screaming/pain but it’s definitely getting better. It’s 1/3 of the day, rather than all day. I gave him a suppository yesterday and a lot of green, toxic poo came out and then one today and it was a normal colour. Hoping he can poo on his own, tomorrow, without needing help. His feeds are still reduced but he is eating now.

He still needs to be nursed to sleep and is up every hour through the night, upset, which is very tiring, but he is having moments where he’s awake and alert, smiling etc. They’ve been non existent this week. Everyday we’re seeing small improvements though so fingers crossed we’re coming out of it now!

Hi OP, how long did this last for, for your little one? I’m in exactly the same boat with my 9 week old - been a different baby since his first jabs on Monday. Unhappy when he’s awake wanting to sleep but struggling to stay asleep. Was such a good sleeper before this! Wondering how much longer to expect this to go on for. 5 days post jabs now!

mumtumok · 07/06/2025 18:11

all of mine were like this because of the live vaccine. Baby’s probably just feeling a bit rubbish, soldier through mummy 🫶🏻

Hello!
Aw I’m sorry to hear you’re going through it. It’s horrible to watch your contented little baby become unrecognisable.

We had an awful time of it - it went on for about 2-3 weeks but it got gradually better through that time, and he eventually returned to his happy little self.

We actually ended up returning to the GP a few days later and he was referred to the paediatric ward in hospital as his throat became ulcerated. I suspect his digestive tract was too, but that wasn’t confirmed by doctors, I could just tell by the way he was behaving that his insides were in immense pain.

I believe it was an adverse reaction to the rotavirus vaccine as I have since read lots into it. I actually made the decision, after a lot of research and speaking to our GP, not to give him the second dose as I couldn’t bear to put him through it again (DS1 was totally unbothered by it, so it’s very rare). He’s had all his other vaccines since and been completely fine!

It does pass but it may take time. Batten down the hatches, get as much support as you can, and try to take it in shifts with your partner if you’re able to- just so you get some sleep. Wishing you and your lovely baby well! ❤️
