Opinions for nappy brands

Hi all!
Little one isn't here yet but I was hoping to start picking up maybe a pack of nappies or wipes etc each week with the food shop to try and get ahead cost wise before she arrives but it's such a minefield! I'm not expecting to have a full stock to last me years or anything but I thought it may just be helpful to get ahead slightly while still working full time on full pay!
My husband's family are all prone to skin sensitivities so I'm fully expecting there to be brands that she just won't be comfortable in, though I guess that's just trial and error.
So...
What brands are we recommending?
Are different brands better for daytime/nighttime?
What sizes are best to start with?
And, am I just overthinking this??🫣

You kind of need to know what size baby your expecting! You might be out of size 1s after two packs, or in tiny nappies, or spend ages in size 2... To start with we had a couple of packs of Lidl and Aldi 1 and 2 nappies. We ended up donating various half-used packs (bought by well meaning relatives or used out and about in emergencies) to friends who had babies a couple of months later.

We had loads of Tesco wipes, ended up unable to use them for weeks due to severe nappy rash and had to stock up on cotton balls. Finally back using them and I buy Huggies when on offer, supermarket own brand the rest of the time. You can also go reusable for wipes (but I am not that keen on washing, and only use reasuble face wipes now that baby eats solids...)

We’ve had no issues with Asda’s own nappies. Avoided Aldi because I heard from other people that they leaked a lot when there was a wet nappy

Sunshineclouds11 · 27/01/2025 12:53

I go between Asda, Morrisons nutmeg and Aldi. No issues with either.

Few newborn packs, size 1 and 2.
I wouldn't go overboard as pp they go through sizes quite quick to start.

Avoid Asdas own wipes, they stink.
I use pampers sensitive the white pack, normally on offer.
Also agree with plenty cotton wool to start with.

I'll never understand stocking up hugely, why not just put the money to one side. Get a coin jar for the nursery or something

Hayley1256 · 27/01/2025 12:56

I loved Aldi nappies and wipes, didn't use Amy other nappies but sometimes used the pure water wipes when on offer. I couldn't use pamper or buggies wipes as they brought her out in nappy rash. I avoided most johnsons products and used child's farm then natural cocunut oil

Pigsinblankets13 · 27/01/2025 12:56

Aldi nappies are my favourite.
Pampers water wipes also.

ARichtGoodDram · 27/01/2025 13:00

For our youngest we used Aldi to start with, but then switched to Boots own brand. Their wipes are much better and with advantage points and constant offers they don't actually work out much more expensive.

Don't stock up too much as what nappies suit your baby will depend entirely on their shape. I used Asda's own the whole way through for DD3, but they were useless on DD4.

InTheRainOnATrain · 27/01/2025 13:04

Put the money aside if you want to but it’s pointless stock piling nappies in advance. They can be in the small sizes for unpredictable amount of time. Some brands fit different body shapes better and you have no way of predicting that. If money is tight you don’t want to waste it spending the extra on pampers if you don’t need to, but equally you don’t want to buy loads of supermarket own brand and then have baby be allergic. Also storage can be an issue because they’re so bulky!

But if you’re interested my personal tried and tested combo was pampers harmonie aqua wipes (gentle on newborn skin but don’t stick together coming out of the pack), with amazon mama bear nappies during the day and pampers active fit pants overnight once they were sleeping through because I could depend on them not to leak.

Nellyelephanty · 27/01/2025 14:14

Lidl and Aldi nappies are great!! I also really like Sainsburys.

for wipes Tesco’s made my babies bum really sore. I would do water wipes or lidl replica water wipes

Mrbay · 27/01/2025 14:30

Depends on your baby's body - i learnt this the hard way by stocking up prebirth and give away about 100 unsuitable nappies.

I did find that each time my daughter changed size, I had to buy a different brand.

I've got a small stock ready for baby two, Aldi, Lidi and pampers. In size 1 and 2. Once the baby is out of size 1 & 2, I'll probably move to Rascal and Friends as they are very elasticated and hold so much liquid.

MarioLink · 27/01/2025 15:36

We mostly used cloth but used Pampers when on holiday (affordable for occasional use!) and never had any problems. My best friend used cheaper ones (Aldi or Lidl) and they didn't feel as nice and soft; my baby didn't mind when I tried them though.

MarioLink · 27/01/2025 15:38

Usually used cloth wipes but disposable of choice was Water Wipes - they don't fall apart easily. Hated Huggies wipes (but did like Huggies swim nappies).

MaggieFS · 27/01/2025 15:39

I agree with pp, put the money in a savings account instead so you don't waste it on something you don't like or the wrong size.

Motherofdragons24 · 27/01/2025 19:32

Honestly they’re all much the same. With my first I would only use pampers on my PFB now with my second I pick up any from any shop I happen to be in, definitely not pampers though they are ridiculously expensive compared to shop own brands. My 2 year old has never complained or had any happy rash etc.

JoneseytheAliencat · 27/01/2025 20:01

I've personally never had a terrible experience with any discount nappies (Aldi, Home bargains, Asda - they were all okay), but I recently made the mistake of bulk-ordering Tesco's 'toilet training wipes' for my two year old and oh my God!
Idk if I got a bad batch or whatever but they hardly have any moisture on them at all and they're awful for my daughter's sensitive skin.

ThatPearlZebra · 28/01/2025 08:59

Thanks all, interesting to see that the cheaper ones are up there with the recommendations. I guess at the end of the day it is all personal preference and working out what does or doesn't work for baby.

Regarding the comments about stockpiling, it's not as much to create a stockpile it's more to create the feeling of being prepared and having a couple of potential options while funds still allow. I'd hate the feeling of waiting until she's here to work out what size she'll need then the one pack I buy giving her a rash or something and I have no others to hand to try instead.

I have three friends who are due after me so it's absolutely no hardship to pass any that we may not use on to them, I'm not expecting to be spending loads before she arrives, just enough to give myself peace of mind that I have options to hand if I need them☺️

Sainsbury's nappies are our favourite ones. We use cloth wipes at home and any brand of unscented wipes out and about.

mitogoshigg · 28/01/2025 09:05

As others have said, it's hard to guess. Get a couple of packs of size 1, but otherwise put £5 notes into a savings pot. Far better than guessing.

Personally once mine were out of the very tiny newborn stage (both mine were 6lbers) I switched to cloth that saved me £££ and was so easy

mitogoshigg · 28/01/2025 09:07

To save on wipes buy (or cut up) 24 cloths and a plastic container plus a washing basket, you do not need to use wipes (I did have a pack in the nappy bag for convenience

Starbiscuit · 28/01/2025 09:17

We brought 4 packs of size one nappies - 1 of each brand Pampers, Aldi, Tesco & Asda - to see what worked for us.

Our Dd was born 6lb 1oz. Aldi leaked, pampers were fine but pricey, Tesco were fine, Asda sizing was a bit big for us.

I wouldn’t buy a bulk load in case the brand you decide on doesn’t work for you. I would get a few packs of different brands then put the money aside for when you know what ones you are going to get

BackinBlack24 · 28/01/2025 09:21

I've used Aldi nappies and water wipes since birth can't fault them when she was out of her newborn nappies and sleeping through the night i switched to kit and kin just for night time to get her through the night without leaks (don't buy pampers they are absolute shit) but she is now in no 4 so the Aldi night nappies are perfect .

MacaroniFajitas · 28/01/2025 09:47

Baby is 5.5 months old and in size 4 already so don't bulk buy. We like Pampers Premium protection and find ASDA to be the best supermarket brand.

Amazon baby wipes are the best ones - highly recommend. Water wipes are also good but much pricier.

We hated Boots, Amazon and Tesco nappies. Wouldn't recommend Huggies, ASDA or Tesco wipes either.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 28/01/2025 10:06

It's very much trial and error. Which I know isn't helpful but honestly, what works for some people may not work for you.

Aldi nappies always seemed to leak with my son but they've been recommended a few times.

With wipes, Pampers are my favourite but I don't care that much so I just buy own brand of whatever shop I'm in when I need some.
