11 day old baby very agitated crying whenever awake

Looking for some advice please.
First time mum and Daughter is 12 days old.
For the last 5 nights (including this evening) she has been extremely unsettled from mid afternoon right up until the early hours. Basically crying whenever she is awake (except for feeding) even cuddling doesn’t console her much. She squirms, kicks and flings her arms, gets red in the face and seems like she is uncomfortable/ in pain. She doesn’t seem to want to sleep from 3/4pm right up until the early hours 1am, she’ll drift off for a few minutes and then wake up crying.
Shes been doing a poo every other day, and these have been wet and green. She has regular wind and burps after feeds.
I phoned the midwife this morning for help / advice because each evening is getting worse and she came to visit today because baby had not done a poo for 2 days but of course as soon as she arrived baby did a poo and because it was the morning she was fairly settled.
midwife happy with baby, no concerns and said try some infacol which we have for the last few feeds.
I’m just worried because for hours on end she seems in pain/uncomfortable and inconsolable. I think she only ends up falling to sleep from exhaustion in the end.
Has anyone any advice on what could be causing her upset, I know babies cry a lot and we expected sleepless nights but me and my partner are feeling very helpless and it’s making me very anxious when late afternoon arrives - I have actually cried the last few nights.

Baby is on 3oz every 3 hours and formula fed mamia from Aldi.

Thank you x

I'd seek a second opinion with your GP. My children are 10 and 8 now so my baby days are a long time ago, but I never experienced that with either of mine. Did the midwife suggest colic if she's suggest infacol? What type of bottles are you using? ( if not breastfeeding )

No she actually never suggested colic, she just suggested starting infacol and contact again if she doesn’t settle? I’ve read up on colic on nhs website and posts on here but not sure if it’s something more with daughter crying whenever she’s awake basically :( We do actually use MAM colic bottles

Is she getting overtired? I would maybe try a sling/car/pram nap when she's getting tired. If she's not sleeping from 3pm-1am she will be exhausted!

Silent reflux perhaps? Has she been checked for tongue tie? How does she feed- does she gulp?

Butterflysunshine01 · 26/01/2025 21:39

Is she cold? I think I used to be so scared of my newborn overheating that he must have actually been quite cold some of the time!! But she’s still very young, it could be her body getting used to digestion etc, could you try a different formula? Lots of bicycle legs and gentle tummy rubs to help poo out! And tiger in the tree pose is really lovely for a newborn. Also if she is awake for that long she could definitely be crying because she’s so tired, especially if she’s waking soon after finally falling asleep, will she nap in the pram if you do a few long walks? Or contact naps? A couple of days of more sleep and naps and hopefully this will change xx

Also I’m not sure as didn’t formula feed but could she be hungry and trying to cluster feed? Could you try less ounces more often? Not sure if that’s the done thing though x

Green poo and unsettled baby suggest dairy allergy to me. Mine had this. It gave her silent reflux so she was never sick but constantly in pain. Went on for three long agonising months. Switched her to dairy free formula – after my HV intervened and insisted my GP prescribe it – and she was a different baby within two weeks. Pursue it and don’t settle for “babies cry” – they do, but not all day long and not clearly in pain.

Sending you hugs OP.

One of mine was like this until I gave her Kendamil - only one without fish oil in and more gentle on the stomach. Some other thoughts below.

Could it be that baby is still hungry and wanting more food? Would they take extra if you offered?

It does sound like they're in pain - dentinox drops might be worth trying. Are you also feeding with the bottle in a horizontal position? This can reduce air intake

Sounds like an issue with the milk to me as well. That level of distress over such a prolonged period is not "normal". If you need to, take a video of how she is during that period so that you can show GP/HV/midwife. Don't be fobbed off. How is her weight gain?

Jinglesomeoftheway · 26/01/2025 22:02

Also, have you tried getting her to sleep in a carrier during these periods when she's unsettled?

I also second getting another opinion - do you have any health visitor centre drop ins near you?

LBFseBrom · 26/01/2025 22:56

It does sound like colic but we cannot diagnose. However lots of small babies with symptoms you describe have colic. They draw their legs up during the spasms, and they scream. It's very distressing, poor little things. Infacol is prescribed for colic.

At eleven days she is still getting to used to being out and probably misses being inside you, op. Bless her heart.

This may stop of its own accord but if it doesn't, take her to your GP.
