Why is there so much Peppa Pig?

Ok full disclosure I have only watched 1 or episodes, but within the plethora of children's shows available today it's surely one of the most boring and most overrated. Yet the character is somehow all over my house!
I have a toddler DD, she probably watches a couple of episodes a week with a different caregiver and she watches other stuff that must be more engaging. But she talks about Peppa Pig so much. She always favours the Peppa books and toys. Anything in the shops with Peppa on she wants (she doesn't get, and yet, somehow more Peppa merch emerges in my house.)
All her play mates and cousins up to about 5 y/o seem to have the same obsession.
If we are in a pinch and we need to buy a cup/bib/t-shirt out and about you can guarantee the first one we find will have Peppa on it.
Books that I didn't think were Peppa Pig themed now seem to feature her. I swear she wasn't there when I bought them.
There is a picture of Peppa on the potty, on the water bottle, Wrapping paper. Then there's the Peppa Pig stickers - they must be procreating somehow because I only bought one sheet but they are everywhere non-stop. I bet money I have one on my stock right now.

Please tell me I'm not the only one?

I’m proud to say we have zero Peppa pig things in our house. I also have never put it on for mine to watch but they obviously know about it through others and seeing it out and about like you say it - it can be everywhere. I purposely avoid it 😁

Boredlass · 26/01/2025 07:38

It’s very popular. My son loved it when he was young

WilderHawthorn · 26/01/2025 07:52

I avoided it like the plague when DC were little, Peppa is a brat and the storylines are terrible. Hey Duggee was the favourite for the youngest but the older two really liked Topsy and Tim

Do you live in my house?

Yourethebeerthief · 26/01/2025 08:07

I've never seen the show and neither has my son. We have no Peppa Pig things. Thomas the Tank Engine on the other hand...

OolongTeaDrinker · 26/01/2025 08:12

It’s easily avoided- we never had it on at home as the main character is such an awful brat! Hey Duggee and Bluey were the favourites in our house. Avoiding Peppa Pig also meant we never had to suffer going to Peppa Pig world too so that was an added bonus!

I think it's easier to avoid for boys. Definitely more a girl's thing. It's baby shark in my house 🫣

I like those two as well actually. Bluey probably gets equal airtime in my house but Peppa is still in demand toys/merch wise.

I should say that mine doesn't do tons of screen time and doesn't actually ask for it to be on TV. But if there is a book toy or anything with Peppa on that's what she wants

Peppa Pig is an inspiration. I have all the DVDs and I based a lot of my policies on the values that Peppa and her family have in their life.

My one criticism is the fact of having two eyes on one side of the head just looks wrong, which fortunately has been corrected when one visits Peppa Pig World.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 26/01/2025 08:35

Sounds like she’s here to stay. My house sometimes looked like a Peppa explosion and my son is turning 19 this year!
Didn’t realise it was so popular still!

LurcherMumma · 26/01/2025 08:46

@LizTruss that's genuinely brilliant 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Disclaimer: I love Peppa pig. Rather than boring, I believe Toddlers see it as slow pased and not overstimulating like many TV shows. They can follow the story from a young age. And the voice is slow and a bit hypnotising. Also, apart from them being pigs it's very much about every day life.

It's got a bit too much teasing and wining, fat shaming and gender stereotypes, but as long as it's not binged I think it's great, helps children process every day life and prepare for things such as the dentist and birthday parties.

Older children often like fantasy, but younger children, boring every day life. Also.... muddy puddles.

WhereAreMyKids · 14/04/2025 06:27

It's when you realise her face looks like a 13 year olds doodle of balls and a penis....

TheWayTheLightFalls · 14/04/2025 07:02

Yup. In her defence, in this house we used Peppa to teach our second language and it worked. It’s great for language learning because the format is often Narrator: Peppa and George are jumping in muddy puddles - frame: Peppa and George jumping in muddy puddles.

What gets me is PAW Patrol. Eldest watched it ages 4ish at nursery and I thought it was pure unadulterated nonsense, like a show about a seven year old Elon Musk in charge of utilities in suburban America. Thought I’d dodged a bullet with next two children. But somehow despite never seeing it at home the other day I overheard them playing a game in which one was Rocky and the other was Rubble. Must be nursery!

1AngelicFruitCake · 14/04/2025 07:06

It’s harmless. I liked the all the different characters. There’s humour in it. The storylines are e sugar situations young children can relate to.

I miss the days of Peppa Pig!

2in2022twoyearson · 14/04/2025 07:47

I hate paw patrol. DD faveraote went from Peppa pig to octonorts to paw patrol, which was a favourite rom about 3-6 years so we inadvertently became a very low screen household. We don't have a TV licence so choose netflix program. Me: want to watch something? DD: let's watch paw patrol. Me:not that again, how about.... DD:no, paw patrol, paw patrol. Me:no TV then.

I quite like that PP has so many episodes that just about every topic is covered. How do you know about the stone age, dear toddler? Oh, Peppa Pig. What's that you're telling me about Big Ben? Oh right, that's from Peppa Pig too. We didn't use to allow it and our children have very limited screen time but actually it's really not that bad. Second child who has had far more exposure to it is no worse off than first born.

Vitrolinsanity · 14/04/2025 08:02

We used to live it when DS was tiny. Although I preferred Ben and Holly. There came a day when I realised I had Nanny Plum nailed as my parenting style.

I love nanny plum. So sarcastic. Unfortunately my DD took a strong dislike to Ben and holly at the childminders for some unexplained reason. It she doesn't forget. Years later now she has a little brother aged 2, she holds her dislike for Ben and holly.
