10 week old inconsolable

I’m at my wits end….last few days, my 10 week old has been much more difficult to get to sleep, and during her wake windows is absolutely screaming, colic levels of screaming which we haven’t seen for about a month. It’s almost like she’s in pain, but other times she’s her normal happy smiley self.

She isn’t teething, it’s way too early, and she doesn’t have the flushed cheeks, drooling etc; she doesn’t have a temperature. Her naps have been a bit rubbish over the last couple of days and she’s been waking around 30-40 minutes into her naps, and it also takes three or four goes to transfer her into her crib each night whereas before she would stay asleep on the first try. The only other thing I can think of is that I’m somehow missing her hunger cues, but I feed her pretty much bang on every 2/2.5 hours from the breast.

I don’t know what has changed, but looking for any suggestions or solidarity 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Strip her and check top to toe that there is nothing digging in to her, hair/thread caught round her toes etc.

She might be going through a growth spurt? I would offer a feed first every time they cried at that age.
Offer both breasts and go back to the first side again.

Have you tried feeding more often? At that age if mine cried I offered a feed.

Agree just offer milk as a first port of call, she's still tiny

That sounds tough!

DD was tricky around then too. I think it might be their ‘peak’ crying time? At 19 weeks now and it did gradually get better.

Few suggestions:

  • I was told they can’t have too much breastmilk so feed feed feed if you can. I thought at first she couldn’t be hungry but turns out she was growing quick (she’s a big baby!) and developing quick so needed it way more frequently than others
  • DD had teething pains around then and nurse told me it’s never too early. I only knew because if I put my finger in her mouth she’d gnaw it off - no flushed cheeks. Still haven’t sprouted yet but sometimes them moving around causes pain/. Bonjela and a teether helped. Recently I’ve been freezing breast milk and putting it in a Frida push feeder which gives her a lot of relief
  • Standing, facing out or in carrier. DD decided no more us sitting and no lying down for her about then. It’s insane how quickly standing up with her and facing her outwards calms her. Even better if we can get her outside which has sucked in the winter dark and weather.

With sleep starting to change there’s also an overtired chance. Still struggling with that myself, it started about then, so I’m not sure I’ve got any better advice than to check wake windows, batten down the hatches and do whatever you can to encourage sleep as it can be hard. We had a few nights around 10-12 weeks where she scream cried for 2 hours after false starting and only calmed down after 30 mins outside in the middle of the night. The false starts haven’t stopped but we’ve all got used to them now sadly!

Wishing you peace and quiet soon OP!

Thanks all - she did chill out after a couple of days so it must have been a growth spurt or development thing. She also seems to struggle with reflux quite a lot which I think also doesn’t help!
