Toddler constipation 2.5 years old

Looking for some advice on constipation in toddlers. My son is 2.5 and since we attempted (and failed) potty training at Christmas he has been constipated, in terms of the fact that he isn’t going regularly, at the worst point it was 6 days. It also coincided with him going back to nursery where I know he doesn’t drink enough fluids. This has been addressed and they are encouraging plenty of fluids now. He doesn’t actually show any discomfort but will go days without pooing and when he does it’s hard for him. We’ve been given lactulose which worked straight away within 3 hours the first time we gave it but then he didn’t go again for days. Doctor said after this pattern of giving a 10ml dose, him going but then not going again for days and having to give another 10ml dose we should start giving him a lower dose every day 5ml to try and keep him moving. I’m concerned about making him reliant on it but of course need to give him it. He has a varied diet with plenty of fibre, fruit, grains etc and we’ve been giving prunes. I’m also concerned because after a few days without going he has tiny bits of poo in his nappy and keeps saying he needs one, the doctor says this can be overflow. If anyone has experienced this situation are we doing the right thing giving him the lactulose daily. Should he be on something else? Is that too much? How did you get your little one back to normal? Tbh the doctor wasn’t hugely helpful and just said give lactulose and see how it goes. I just want to get him back regular every day / every other day like he always has been.

I think you'll need to go back to the GP and ask for movicol. Have a look on the eric website as that's what they should be following.

Agree with PP. Found movicol better than lactulose for my DD

Same as the above PPs. Movicol/Laxido better for keeping them ticking over than lactolulose.

Sounds like he's withholding. Both my DC did/do this. We are currently potty training my nearly 3 year old and it's tough. It needs training in itself. Look at ERIC website and good luck.

Try Prune juice, I used to give to my son table spoons ( Syringes) of it, it did work wonders . Doesn't test nice though you might need yogurt on hand.

Try papaya. It's a natural laxative.
