How to change nappies on mobile baby- desperate!

My DS 9 months has been crawling for a few months and as a result is pretty confident and into everything. It’s made nappy changes difficult for a while but lately they’ve become impossible. He will not lay down for a second. I’ve used everything I can think of as a distraction and now he’s bored of it all. He just wants to crawl away. It’s led to some dubious nappy changes and he’s woken up in the night wet a few times as I’ve not been able to get a nappy on properly. He often ends up needing a full clothes change as he’ll move into his poops before I can clean him up properly, and a full clothes change is worse.

Are there any hacks to doing this that I don’t know? I can’t put him in pull ups as he only wears size 2 or 3 nappies and they’re not made in this size.

worth Trying pampers smallest pull-ups, mine is in size 3 normal nappies but a 4 pull up are fine really! Leaks in cheaper ones but fine in pampers!

Pinkstuffs · 20/01/2025 21:04

@PamelaShipman80 if you read the post I can’t use pull ups as they don’t make them in size 2 or 3.

Pampers for sure do size 3 nappy pants, I've just googled it but that doesn't solve the issue of him needing to lay down in order to have his bum wiped 🤔 DD is an terrible fidget and won't sit/lay still for anything! When she was that age I used to pop her vest together over one shoulder and use the pouch that her vest made as a cocoon for her arms. Otherwise, something they really want but can't usually have to distract them. DD's favourite thing ever is the TV remote so I give her a spare one and let her eat it for the 3 minutes it takes to whip her nappy off, change her out and chuck a new one on. Good luck though, I hope you sort something out!

I have very long legs and I used to pin my DD by the shoulders with my feet. I realise that would not work for everyone. My DS used to wear a tall hat from which interesting items could be suspended to keep the child amused.
We also found that immobilising infant on the back wing of a Subaru Impreza to be efficient.
Feel free to try any of these methods.

Pampers do size 3 pull ups, we used them from 6 months when my DS started crawling.

FoxtrotSkarloey · 20/01/2025 21:09

Pampers nappy pants start from size 3.

Also, when you remove the dirty nappy, put a muslin or disposable pad under the nappy. As soon as you open up the dirty nappy, use the front of it to swiftly wipe front to back and remove the excess poo immediately. Then put it right out the way so there's minimal left behind for him to wriggle in. Then with him lying directly on a disposable pad/muslin, clean away any remaining poo.

It is hard when they start moving.

What a rude response. I think you need to re-read what @PamelaShipman80 said.

Change on the floor and use your leg to pin him down.

Or change him on your lap so he can't crawl away.

Temporaryname158 · 20/01/2025 21:10

as he got up to crawl off I firmly said no and laid him back down. Repeat repeat repeat.

I was the parent and it wasn’t ok to go off dirty or with leaking nappies. It was a non negotiable.

It wasn’t rude the post has been edited! Originally it just said ‘pull ups’. I didn’t know Pampers do a size 3, they’re expensive but might be worth it.

Is there anything ‘forbidden’ he’d lay still to hold and look at while having his nappy changed? Like the tv remote.

Hercisback1 · 20/01/2025 21:12

Knee to the chest.

Swift as possible, have everything ready, nappy underneath, tabs out, before getting the old one off.

Try potty sitting to catch poos as well, especially after food. One less poo faff.

Hercisback1 · 20/01/2025 21:15

Are you doing the scoop and place top of the nappy under the bum when you deal with a poo? Scrape off the majority like this. Then put the top side under the bum, wipe off any left, pull out the pooey nappy and the fresh one is underneath ready to apply in seconds. Firm hand on the stomach while you do it up.

EmmaOvary · 20/01/2025 21:15

If you sit 90 degrees to him you can gently use your leg to hold him in place. In another month or so he will be standing and IME it’s sometimes easier to change them when they’re standing as long as they stand still. Solidarity, OP, I had a wiggly one too.

Pinkstuffs · 20/01/2025 21:15

I’ve tried tv remote, car keys, mobile phone, glasses… they work for a few changes then he gets bored. Hes also learnt to throw them over his shoulder so he has an excuse to crawl after them.

I can give the pampers pull-ups a go for night time, hopefully the fit will be ok as his size 3 pampers nappies atm are huge on him! The tabs cross over when fastened.

WildGeece · 20/01/2025 21:17

I used the leg pinning technique. Baby on floor, adult sitting alongside at 90 degrees, one adult leg gently pressing on babies chest to keep them still.

I also got pretty good at nappy changes of a standing baby from behind - I'd put something of interest like a book on a low window ledge or table and whip it off. Obviously only works if baby can stand and it takes some practice!

This is what I did. Change on the floor, sit to the side and use your left leg to gently clamp down over their tummy.

Poppadomstreet · 20/01/2025 21:25

Aldi pull ups come up smaller than pampers and they start at size 3.

For poos I have a bag of random stuff and give DS something from that bag to distract him usually: variety or hair clips, combs, empty pot of Vaseline, silicone or wooden kitchen utensils, kids electric toothbrush - spare not used!, fidget toys - particularly mini slinky’s, pop tubes, morph worms, poppets (all available on Amazon). Wouldn't let him play with any unsupervised but they come out for nappy changes or other urgent things that need a distraction and then straight back away to keep the novelty.

For a wet nappy I just do it while he is climbing onto the dining table standing up.

iwillfghhjjj · 20/01/2025 21:35

Either give him a high value snack or toy or use your feet to hold him in place or lift his bum in the air by his feet with one hand and change him with the other hand.

Pixiedust1234 · 20/01/2025 21:43

Use your leg, arm, elbow or even head to pin the wriggler down. Learn to do most of it one handed, I actually became ambidextrous at this point 😂

welshweasel · 20/01/2025 22:05

Leg over their chest to pin down, pull trousers down and keep round ankles, use one hand to hold both feet together and the other hand to wipe their bum. Even with the most mobile of babies and toddlers it keeps them still enough to do a change!

Cormoran · 20/01/2025 22:21

DD was like that. What made the trick was changing her on the changing table only on a mat with high sides, a bit like this one https://sorenshouse.co.uk/products/flexa-baby-changing-mat-3-colours-available but narrower. There was nowhere to go for her. Any attempt to change her on the floor or anywhere, ended up with her twisting and twisting until she was free.

Flexa Baby Changing Mat

This soft and practical Flexa baby changing mat makes changing time feel like child's play! The thick and soft foam mattress keeps your baby super comfortable and secure.

You just get better at kinda holding them down and quicker at doing the nappy

Antihistamine62 · 20/01/2025 22:30

On the lap. I’ve had wrigglers from birth and it’s the only way I’ve ever been able to change them without poo ending up everywhere

frostiess · 20/01/2025 22:50

You need to change him in an area he doesn't crawl around in- he's used to crawling off now so he will keep trying/ doing it.

I'd get a high sided mat and in a room you have to go out of your lounge/ close the door and put the baby mat to the door and in the corner so he is sealed in one side and his head (he won't then twist to go into a closed door or wall.
You then only really have one escape route which is where your body would ideally go.

Ta daaaa!
