2.5 yr old new childminder, won’t sleep at night now

Last week my son (he’s 2 yrs 8 months) abruptly started a new childminder - our previous ones closed and we had to find somewhere new asap. She is great but very much “protects” nap time for her 4 children - they all sleep anywhere from 1-2 hours at the same time each day.

Prior to this change, my son had been in the process of what we thought was dropping his nap. The previous childminders didn’t enforce nap time, we were quite flexible at home, and his night time sleep improved with reduced or no nap (although he would be very grumpy in the afternoons if he didn’t nap).

Since the change last week, he’s suddenly waking overnight again (this had stopped for the most part) and is now waking up before 5am every day and not going back to sleep. When it was good he was sleeping past 6am (this is as good as it’s ever got for us - but just to give context).

Yesterday my son was at home with my husband and he only had a 45 minute nap but still did the same thing last night.

Can anyone shed some light on whether this could be too much sleep at the childminders and therefore a knock on effect for days to come, or do you think it’s just due to a lot of changes this week? Any similar experiences would be great to hear about. Thanks x

It could be a change in nap schedule - or the new routine with CM.

Has the CM explained how long he is napping for? Will she limit it to 45mins if you request that?

For the change of routine thing, that should resolve in 2 weeks max, as in, he should be settled in 2 weeks, so any impact on night sleep from that alone should be sorted by then (at the latest).

Good luck - every hour makes such a difference to their moods (and your sanity!)
