19month old still in 9-12 month clothes?

DD was born on the 2nd percentile, she was 5lb15 at 38 weeks.

She has remained small for her age but has grown steadily, she's always been a clothes size behind.

It just occurred to me that she's 19 months old now and still not in 12-18 months. To me they seem massive!!

Anyone else have a small toddler? She's walking, talking and nursery tell me very bright, just tiny.
Me and DH are average height and our DS is slightly above average.

I just worry about her being the smallest, and I guess I imagined she'd catch up by 2 but it's not looking that way..

DGD (twin) was born on 1st percentile and stayed that way. At nearly 14 she is beginning to catch up but is still, by far, the shortest in her year group. She is generally very petite so looks in proportion. Today I just bagged up some 9-10 year old clothes summer clothes from last year to give to charity. I am hoping this current growth spurt lasts as she would much rather be taller. Doctors never worried about her weight and growth as she was on a steady percentile line.

My middle one was like this - except that she was on the 50th centile (8lb 2oz) when born 6 days overdue.

She then steadily dropped centiles until she was off the bottom of the chart. We were never worried about her - neither DH nor I are tall, and she was always perfectly healthy - just small. She met all her milestones, was walking at 13months, was happy and animated, and her hair and nails were always growing, and she always had a good colour.

She doubled her birth weight by a year rather than 6mths as suggested so was just over 16lb at 1. She was wearing 3-6m clothes on her first birthday. By the time she started school at just short of 5, she was still wearing a mix of 2-3 and 3-4 clothes.

I’d say she stayed in clothes a year or two smaller than her age until she was about 11 and then she started to catch up. She’s now 17 and is a petite size 6/8. (She has a large chest hence the size 8 in some tops) She was one of the smallest in her year group when she started secondary school, and while she’s still amongst the smallest now in sixth form at 5’2”, she no longer stands out as being exceptionally small. There are people shorter than her. She has size 6 feet though which I think is quite large for the size of her. Her 14 year old sisters are taller than she is and I suspect she has stopped growing now.

Thank you both for your responses. I guess part of me likes her being small and sweet and she's such a pretty little one that everyone fusses over her.
But I suppose it always feels strange for me because none of the rest of us are small so I worry there is something wrong. Although no one has ever said there is likely anything wrong.

I just feel like everyone else's baby is normal size or bigger than average and I don't see many small

DD1 was 5lbs 12oz at birth (38w) and then poorly so dropped to 0.4th centile. DH is 6'2, I'm 5'7. We were both overweight at the same. We are not small people and it was very strange to have such a tiny baby. She would always be a clothes size behind. She did however rapidly start to catch up around 2yo and at 3.5yo she is now 70th for both weight and height. I suspect her more natural centile.

Did you have any issues in pregnancy such as high BP, high uterine cord pressure or preeclampsia? They can cause babies to be small at birth and then catch up later on. There is still time for her to have a big growth spurt or it may be she is just going to be a petite one.

You'll soon be having your 2yr check with HV, so you could always flag it with them and see if they think any referrals are in order?

DD is 2 just over a week and still comfortably in 12 to 18 month clothes. She’s always been petite and I’m used to her brother who has always been big for his age so I do worry sometimes. She seems fine and full of energy though. I suppose they’re all different and they all grow at different rates, I’m sure it’s normal but if you’re worried you could always bring it up with the health visitor.

Ds2 was 5lb 6 at 35 weeks. He was always at least 6 months behind in clothes until he reached junior school. Years later he's a great hulking teenager and has more than caught up!
As long as she's consistently putting weight on i wouldn't worry too much, but as someone else mentioned if you are worry you can mention it at the 2 year check.

poorbuthappy · 15/01/2025 19:42

I discovered my twins at age 5 were still in 12-18 months pants.
The good thing about slow but steady growers is you wear the clothes out before they grow out of them.

Interested to know what you'd call average height for you and her dad?

My DS was still in 18-2yr trousers at 4yo. He's suddenly one of the tallest in his class. I was the opposite, always middle of the class, average but then didn't grow as much as everyone else and am just 5ft. She's so young I wouldn't worry about her height now, just be thankful she's easy to lift and you're not breaking your back when you have to carry her!

fartfacenotfatface · 15/01/2025 20:59

DD (8lb at birth when a week overdue) was still in 3-6 month clothes at 12 months and 6-9 months until 18+ months.
When she started school at 4.5 years, the school jumper with a logo in the smallest size (age 3-4) was way too big and we had to order a plain one in age 2-3.
When she started secondary school, she was wearing age 9-10 clothes.
She's a teenager now and likely almost fully grown. She'll probably reach around 5ft 3" which is petite but not unusually so.

Mintoo · 16/01/2025 10:04

Thanks all for your replies.

DH is 6ft and I'm about 5ft6.
DS is 4 but about 75th percentile and wearing 5 year old clothes already.

DD is perfectly in proportion, and very happy and energetic. Just tiny! I guess someone has to be the smallest...

The jump to 12-18 size is huge as now lasting 6 months rather than the 3.

My eldest was always a size ahead. Went into 12-18 about 9 months but had to roll up sleeves and sometimes legs. She needed it for her big tummy! I felt like she was in that size for about a year 😂 She was always really chubby and then as soon as started walking she lost it all.

She's still smaller than average now as is my other DD. I'm small myself but dh is 6ft4 so I always thought I'd have tall kids. It doesn't help to compare. My niece is a couple of months older and she's head and shoulders above my eldest, she's taking the height from my in laws side, her mum is really tall.

I personally quite like being small, I'm 5ft 1. I was all the smallest in my class. Kids did try to take the piss but it didn't bother me, I was fiesty and always had a come back 😂

Have a chat with health visitor next time u see them but if she's well otherwise don't worry. Looks like she's just going to be quite petite.

DD is nearly 5 and still fits 2-3. She even has a few beloved items in 18-24m but they are definitely looking snug now!
