i've been wondering this for a while now. i've been lucky in that the times that bub has needed to be changed whilst out i've taken the car and changed him in there. but would like to know what to do in the inevitable situation of being out and about (not at shopping mall with mums room) and needing to change him. wcs don't always seem equipped or large enough - and really don't want to think about putting him on a wc floor... i'm missing something here aren't i???

While they are still smallish, it is easy enough for you to change them while they lie on your lap. This is actually easier with a bigger baby than with a newborn.

In case of dire emergency I do carry a messy mat in my change bag, then if there is really nowhere else messy mat goes onto floor of toilet, then change mat, then dd2!
Given the choice though I'd rather do it anywhere else e.g. in a corner of a field

Floors, sofas in cafes, seats in pubs, patches of grass..pretty much anywhere. Very rarely do I seem to be in a cafe with baby change so I often end up on the loo floor, your jumper or something under the change mat makes it a bit nicer if it is a really hard floor.

I change my DS in the car boot. When he was small, I used to change him in his pram (carry cot) - shoved the change mat underneath for accidents. Likewise, on the grass, floor etc.

moocowme · 05/05/2008 20:27

usually in the car somehow. failing that on the floor out of the way somewhere.

all the while dreaming that i am back in Australia where disabled toilets that are not locked and have nappy change and chair are the norm just about everywhere, but then its warm enough just to change him on a towel in the park most times.

what i find harder is finding somewhere that i can go to the toilet without leaving DS outside or the door open.

any flat surface, as long as not a table where people eating.

Take a muslin with you when you go out and you can spread it on less than clean surfaces. I used to change mine on benches.

I always put a terry folded in half on my change mat, more pleasant than the cold plastic I think. If I have to change her on a floor I open the terry out so it is wider and her hands can't touch the floor

meimango · 06/05/2008 18:05

cheers also shitemum and liz79 will use the tips

change bag cheekily bulges a little more

I tended to use the carrycot whe the boys were really little and then the pushchair we have lies flat so if stuck with no where obvious to change I have made a change table out of the buggy.
