Speech delay and starting school

My ds starts school this September. He's been severely speech delayed and has only just started talking in the last few months. I know a lot can change in 8 months but because of this delay he can't count to 10 or do his abc's, how important is this for school? Does he need to know these things before he starts? What is a necessity to starting school? He's toilet trained and can dress himself

Abc... irrelevant.

Counting... I did a concerted effort to teach my DD (with speech delay) in the August. (Long story... nursery didn't think she had any additional needs but had an "over anxious mother"). The school was great... they helped her learn at her pace.
(She actually had speech delay and selective mutism. The school picked it up within a week).

They expect the pupils to have a range of skills.
