How many barbie-like dolla does your DC have?

Mine is 4yo and she only owns 2 barbie-like dolls, the disney pricesses ones. She also has a couple of old fashioned dolls and then tons of soft toys but yesterday went to a playdate and was shocked to see DD’s friends having many more barbies. DD asked me why she only has 2 on the way home, I think it’s a totally fair amount at this age but was curious to hear what others are doing with their Dc

Do what works for you and your family OP.

I have a 3 year old boy who has no interest whatsoever in dolls, but loves his teddy bears and has a little basket bed and blanket to tuck them in and care for them. He loves to look after them with his doctor's set and pretend to feed them. We've been to play dates where the soft toys are absolutely bursting out of the kids rooms, whereas he only has one small basket of about 10 favourite teddies/soft toys.

We keep it like that on purpose because our home isn't very big and we don't want it absolutely overrun with too many toys. There are only so many he can play with and I'd rather he had the ones he truly loved and treasured than a room bursting at the seams with any old toy. He gets the fun of playing at friends' houses where they might have toys that he doesn't have, but equally at home he has toys they don't have. And that's fine.

My memories of Barbies as a child were that I only had about 4 or 5 and they were bought at special times so they had a lot of meaning behind them. I remember a Canadian relative bringing a special edition Barbie over from Canada when they visited. They were treasured and I didn't need hundreds. I genuinely believe it's important to teach these values to children. I recently watched Buy It Now on Netflix and it's cemented that belief even more!

Does the child have an older sibling ?
My son had loads of toy cars but he inherited a fair whack from his older brother.

I think that you’re overthinking this non-issue - some kids have lots of toys while others don’t have as many for lots of reasons like parental income, size of house, how many people buy gifts for child on special occasions (dolls are often a “safe” choice) etc

When my dd got older, her collection of Barbies increased because sometimes buying second hand Barbie was cheaper than buying Barbie clothes (plus buying used often meant getting more unusual clothes)

3.5 year old has 3, one princess one and 2 mermaids. She just got them recently, she might have more if she was into them for longer.

There isn’t a right or wrong. You think you have a fair amount, that doesn’t mean the other family is wrong.

MixedFamily · 14/01/2025 13:05

Wasn’t implying the others were doing it wrong by the way, made me wonder if perhaps DD doesn’t have many! I completelye agree that every family does their own thing, was just curious to see what others are doing with their DC

Probably about 20, all the Disney princesses plus some of the princes and some other Barbie ones. We have the giant Disney princess castle so they come in great for imaginary play.

Moonlightstars · 14/01/2025 15:39

We avoid them entirely. Same with those bratz dolls that look a bit like prostitutes. Luckily none of the kids were into them
So weirdly shaped. They did have a lot of toy dogs and if you normal baby dolls.

BookWormBetsie · 14/01/2025 15:44

My daughter probably has in excess of 100 Barbies They absolutely drive me mad every so often I will say to her let's go through them and throw away what we don't need or donate but she always has a very good reason why she has to keep every single one of them.

newrubylane · 14/01/2025 15:53

My 5 nearly 6 yo had about eight, I think, but probably only had maybe three a year ago. She's had a couple each for birthday and Christmas since then. She wasn't into them at all when she was 4. If she wants more then that's a really easy idea for you come birthday/Christmas etc.

I couldn't even begin to count. At least 20 more likely over 30, all bought as presents/handed down etc, that's between two children though. They all have ratty hair and are mostly naked. Well loved and played with.

MixedFamily · 14/01/2025 16:02

@Moonlightstars I hate bratz too! much prefer disney princesses dolls to traditional barbies also

A complete guess, maybe 50? More than half given by grandparents (often secondhand) or DSis (not new, DSis hands me down her DD's toys and they get loads). I've bought about 10 Disney Princess dolls and 7 Barbie dolls. DD is 6, they were bought over the past 3 years or so.
