Cot Bed Duvet for 1 year old?

My little girl is 14 months old and she currently sleeps in a sleep sack, she has since newborn and she sleeps well and I love the idea as she can't pull these over her face, she's only a tiny girl she is 14 months old but only just gone into 6-9 clothing, my partner keeps saying when are we supposed to give her the cot bed duvet because they say 12m+ on them, I personally don't feel comfortable with it yet as those duvets are still quite big and could easily wrap around her but my partner thinks she'd be fine, what age did you give your babies cot bed duvets?

My 18 month old is still in a sleep sack. He wriggles a lot in his sleep and can be all over the place.

He's staying in the sleep sacks till he's no longer wriggling around in his sleep.

JammySlag · 13/01/2025 03:52

Mine is two and in a sleepsack and will be until they stop wriggling so much in their sleep. Have a look on the lullaby trust - they will have useful info to prevent cot death.

My daughter is 2.5 and still an a sleep sack if she had a duvet I think I would spend so much time being woken by her being cold as she has wriggled out from underneath it.

I am adding a fleecy blanket to her so she slowly gets used to having a blanket/ cover in bed

My eldest kept her sleep sack until she was around 2.5yrs. She also still had the side of her cot up as she was never a climber so I didnt feel the need to take it down too early. I also felt very reassured by them so if they are working for you, i wouldn't rush to change.

LegoHouse274 · 13/01/2025 04:56

Why does your partner want to move her to a duvet? If she's happy in the sleeping bag and still fits nicely and sleeps well, I don't understand why he'd want to mess with her normal sleep routine?! Risks her not sleeping well.

My eldest was in a sleeping bag til she was almost 3, she was petite and fit it in until then. My DC2 was in one til about 2.5, chunkier toddler and outgrew it then. The little one took a little while to get used to it, at first often refused to have it on so we'd have to wait for them to fall asleep and then creep back in the room and tuck them in. Also went through a period of waking in the night cold cos it had fallen off and they didn't know how to fix it themselves yet.

I think part of transitioning to a duvet is when they are able to adjust it themselves. My 2.5 years old started using one a couple of months ago. It's very cute to see him wriggle into bed and pull it up to his eyes. Certainly not something I'd want a 1 year old doing.

Also I think it's best to start with a fairly flat pillow to help them get used to staying in the same place.

If the sleeping bag is working no need to change anything. Mine is 2.5 and wriggles around a lot at night so I still have her in a tog sleepsuit rather than a duvet. She outgrew her sleeping bags a few months ago and started getting uncomfortable in them but I didn’t want to introduce a duvet in winter when she’ll get cold if she throws it off. If she climbs out of the cot and you need to take the side off you will also need to use a duvet but until that happens just carry on as is if she is sleeping well.

SnowyIcySnow · 13/01/2025 06:55

When they transitioned to a bed. Which was pretty early, as they both climbed out of cots. But both were closer to 2 than 1.

Journeyintomelody · 13/01/2025 13:28

I kind of feel bad reading these posts. My DD is 10 months and sleeps with me. No duvet, no blanket, no sleep sack. We just wear pjs and socks if it's cold. Don't plan on changing that until December next year so she'll be nearly 2. Then I'll probably think about reintroducing a blanket...and maybe a pillow for me!

UnravellingTheWorld · 13/01/2025 13:29

The duvet says 12+ because they're not recommended any younger due to SIDS risk. That said, there's no wrong or right thing to do - to say your child "should" be using it would be wrong; you should use whatever works for you.

Saying that, a 1yo wouldn't have the motor skils to pull a duvet snug if they get cold. We upgraded to a duvet when my son was 2.5 (and he proceeded to ignore it for months 😅)

mindutopia · 13/01/2025 18:19

It says 12+ months because it’s not safe for under 12 months, so she is only just on the cusp of the safety rating but not actually in a bed. She just needs a bigger or warmer sleep sac. They make them with feet holes. Mine were in them til 3. So much more convenient than a duvet.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 13/01/2025 18:27

15 ish months because she had learnt how to escape the sleep sack and climb out of her cot so we had to put her in a bed.

If your dd is still tinybthenninwouldnt be using a duvet yet.

Mummyboy1 · 13/01/2025 18:27

I kept my son in a sleep sack for as long as possible, then you know they're going to be warm. I transitioned him to a duvet when he was 2.5 yeas old roughly, I the summer, so he had time to get used to it before the colder nights.

dementedpixie · 13/01/2025 18:31

My ds didn't come out the sleeping bag until he was 2½ and was moving to a big bed. Keep them in the sleeping bag as long as you can if your lo is happy in it.

lataraw · 13/01/2025 21:03

You can get sleep sacks in sizes up to age 3 I think (though they go by height at that point)

Saschka · 13/01/2025 21:13

Mine was 2.5 as well - sleep sacks keep them in bed! And stop them kicking the covers off and shouting for you to put them back on. DS learned to toddle in his pretty well, he just pushed his feet into the two corners and shuffled along.

Cece92 · 13/01/2025 21:21

I think 12+ is just recommended age. My daughter was in a sleep sack from
Birthday cause I had some weird thing about blankets. I wasn't comfortable with how the midwife showed me to do the blankets kept worrying about them going over her face. However saying that she had a pillow and duvet from 10 months (I know not recommended) but it was a super flat pillow and a thin duvet plus she was fully walking at this point and her cot sides came down on her 1st birthday and she managed to ninja climb out her cot bed at the lowest settings. I think personally go with what's right for you and your little one of the the sleep sack is still working no need to change it. Xx

Haaaaappyyynewyear · 13/01/2025 21:24

14 months is so young still - will she reliably keep her duvet over herself to keep warm? Mine is nearly 3 and only started using a duvet a few months ago and I still have to go in and put the duvet back over him quite often! Personally, I would hold off another year if she’s sleeping well - she can’t kick her sleeping bag off at least!
